When historians look back at the Iran-Israel war that started October 7, they are likely to see two strategic blunders.
First, Iran blundered by trusting Hamas. Hotheaded Sinwar attacked before Hezbollah was ready, allowing Israel to take down Iran’s two major proxies one by one.
Second, Sinwar made the strategic error of tying Hamas to Iran, both weakening Arab governments’ support for the Palestinian cause and tying his movement to a regime that held him in contempt.
Iran, Hamas and the Palestinian people have paid dearly for these errors and the final reckoning remains to be fully summed.
