A brief 🧵on why the latest conspiracy theory about China sending drivers licenses to Wisconsin to allow for fake absentee voters to cast an absentee ballot is just a whole lot of nonsense and people shouldn't believe any of it. 1/

Now this conspiracy theory assumes that there are nefarious actors who will take a fake ID from China, register to vote online, then request an absentee ballot online, then return it by mail. There is no claim of an army of live people registering with fake ID's. 2/

To vote absentee in WI, you must be registered. To register online, you need a WI DL or ID. The # from that DL/ID is used as a unique identifier for the voter. That information is cross-referenced with Dept. of Transportation basically in real time to confirm their identity. 3/

In other words, there has to be an existing record of a DL/ID on file for the registration to go through. A fake plastic ID from China doesn't create a drivers license record in Wisconsin. Any registration attempted would be rejected. No registration, no ballot. 4/

Since I can already hear the question "what about people with fake ID's registering at the polls and voting?" Well, first off, any ID has to "reasonably resemble" the person registering. So to overcome 20,000+ votes in WI, you would need an army of criminals. Very unlikely. 5/

Additionally, those thousands of criminals would have to go from site to site to try to achieve their goal of 20K+ in votes. The logistics would be mind blowing. AND everyone would have to be silent and not tell anyone. Good luck with that with thousands of people. 6/

And let's say someone did do this? It would be caught when the DL/ID info is entered into WisVote. Suddenly there would be 1,000's of error entries. This has not happened. Obviously. 7/

Here's the real story - Donald Trump won WI in 2016, lost WI in 2020, and won WI in 2024. Each time by around 20K votes or so. Not because of some hairbrained idea about fake ID's from China-because he got more votes, then fewer votes, then more votes than the other candidate.8/

So let's put this ridiculous claim about fake Chinese ID's to rest. It's nonsense.
