The Mahabodhi Temple has always been a Buddhist shrine. Archaeological evidence, the 1895 Bodh Gaya Temple case, and the Government of India’s nomination to UNESCO all support this.
1/ The struggle to reclaim the Mahabodhi Temple began in 1885
Sir Edwin Arnold, author of The Light of Asia, was the first to appeal for its restoration to Buddhist hands, even writing to Buddhist countries for support. Anagarika Dharmapala of Sri Lanka took up the cause in 1891
2/ A Buddhist monk, Dharmapala, was assaulted by two Muslim officials and a mob led by the Mahant for performing a Buddhist ritual at the Mahabodhi Temple.
In the 1890s, Dharmapala enshrined a Buddha image at the sacred site.
