Lieutenant de Quatrebarbes

In September 1867, Garibaldi resumed the offensive. He decided to attack Monte-Rotondo, a small town located on a steep hill, north of Rome. The papal garrison was only 350 strong.

2/6 Image
However, after four successive assaults of the enemy, they broke through the fierce resistance of the Papal Zouaves. The incessant artillery fire, directed with great skill by Lieutenant de Quatrebarbes, wrought havoc among the Garibaldians.

"It is largely to M. de Quatrebarbes that the success of the day was due," reported his superior, Colonel de Charette, "and I cannot praise myself enough for his indefatigable zeal and the intelligence with which he succeeded in pass his piece along impassable paths.”

4/6 Image
Firing in the open under a hail of bullets, Quatrebarbes was wounded in the left arm and had to be transported to the ambulance

"God willing! Every day I offer all my sufferings to God so that all my people may serve him faithfully and always be the defenders of the Church”

5/6 Image
“The daily offering of sufferings in union with those of Jesus crucified for the salvation of the world, the patient but also joyful acceptance of illness, are a spiritual resource, a precious treasure in the Church.” (Pope Francis)

Bernard is a saint

The King and Queen of Naples came to visit him. But what really consoled the Zouave was when unannounced, Pius IX entered his room to bless and encourage him! Before retiring, the Sovereign Pontiff laid his hand on the arm of his dear

wounded man and made the sign of the Cross: “My friend, may the Good Lord bless you as I bless you.” The first hopes of recovery vanishing, the doctor decided to amputate the arm.

Aime Dieu et va ton chemin🇨🇦

Among the Zouaves were 250 French Canadians recruited by Bishop Bourget in 1868. They proudly displayed their white flag and their motto: "Aime Dieu et va ton chemin." (Love God and go your way.)

2/9 Image
Pope Pius IX granted them an audience in the Vatican Gardens, which they remembered all their lives:

“The Holy Father ascended the first steps of a portico and we formed a semicircle in front of him, he congratulated us on our devotion to the cause of the Church,

The Pope of Saint Michael

1/6 crc-resurrection.orgImage
In his struggle against the enemies of the Church, Bl. Pope Pius IX drew light and strength from his devotion to Saint Michael: "Saint Michael is most capable of exterminating the accursed sects, daughters of Satan,

who have sworn to ruin of Christian society.”

On several occasions, the Pope exhorted his Zouaves to have recourse to the holy Archangel, by reciting the rosary of Saint Michael or by wearing his scapular.

The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Everyday this month I will be sharing a reflection from the perspective of the Papal Zouaves, the soldiers of the Sacred Heart who volunteered from across Christendom to defend the Papal States and Bl. Pius IX🇻🇦

1/11 Image
Despite their temporal defeat we must remember what our Lord said to St. Margaret Mary, a great champion of the Sacred Heart "I will reign despite my enemies and all those who would oppose it" Additionally we should remember what St. Bernadette wrote to Bl. Pius IX

2/11 Image
"Some years ago I constituted myself, although unworthy, a little zouave of Your Holiness . My weapons are prayer and sacrifice, which I will guard until my last breath. Alone, the weapon of sacrifice will make me fall, but with prayer it will bring me to Heaven."

Oil portrait of the Villèle Papal Zouave brothers, 1867🇻🇦🇫🇷

From left to right: Corporal Gaston de Villèle, Lieutenant Louis de Villèle, Sergeant Charles de Villèle.

In the right-hand corner is Papal Zouave Colonel Athanse de Charette and Msgr. Xavier de Mérode.

Gaston was born on Nov. 25, 1846. He joined the P.Z. in Mar. 1866 and promoted to CPL in Jan. 1867. During the summer of 1867 a cholera outbreak spread across the Papal States and hit the town of Albano especially hard. His company was tasked with tending to the sick,

2/11 Image
afterwards he was promoted to SGT. That Fall, he fought in the 1867 campaign to defend the Papal States and was made a SGM after the Papal victory. A month later he promoted to LT on Dec. 14. 1867.

He defended Rome during the Italian siege on Sep. 20 1870.

The relationship between Jefferson Davis and Bl. Pius IX

A thread in honor of Confederate Memorial Day🧵

When the Civil War ended in April 1865 Confederate President Jefferson Davis was thrown into prison and placed in solitary confinement with his legs riveted with iron.

1/15 Image
Pius IX upon hearing of Davis's mistreatment in prison sent him two photographs of himself, one includes the Bible verse Matthew 11:28 "Come to me all all ye who labor and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest, sayeth the Lord" Pius IX had a previous relationship with

2/15 Image
Davis through Confederate ambassadors to the Vatican. It's probable he also sent the photo because he empathized with Davis on losing temporal power. Since he had lost the majority of the Papal States to the Italians in 1860, he would lose the rest 4 years later in 1870.
