The pesticide industry is trying to get Congress to pass a liability shield so you can’t sue them for harms caused by their products.

Congress passed the same liability shield for vaccine manufacturers in 1986—and it was catastrophic for public health.
Shanahan: “Glyphosate, to me, is … just as bad as the mRNA vaccine in terms of human health and lack of government accountability.”
“The 1986 vaccine safety Act gave immunity to vaccine manufacturers such that if you’re injured by a vaccine, you can’t directly sue the manufacturer.”
“And they’re trying to do that same thing with glyphosate right now.”
Benbrook: “The pesticide industry is working very hard to try to change federal and state laws so that pesticide companies can’t be sued in state court over harms from pesticides that weren’t properly disclosed.”

Benbrook: “Farmers in Europe that grow basically the same varieties of corn and soybeans as farmers in America, but in Europe, they don’t use genetically-engineered seeds and they don’t spray Roundup at anywhere near the rate and volumes that are common in the US.”
“Farmers can manage weeds with far less herbicide.”
“Organic farmers manage weeds without any herbicides. Do they have to do some different things? Yes, they spend less money on herbicides and more money on other practices that are known to also be effective.”
“We need a substantial reboot in our agricultural policies and agricultural subsidies and research priorities.”
“This is not going to happen overnight, and it’s only going to happen if the leadership in the country, in the Congress, in the executive branch, in the universities, and in the commodity groups comes to accept the fact that things aren’t going all that well in parts of American agriculture.”
“What farmers are being forced to do to keep up with weeds that are increasingly resistant to herbicides is spray more herbicides.”
“And spraying more herbicides is just accelerating and worsening the degradation of soil health and the productivity of our soils.”

He revealed that in Europe, glyphosate products were already forced to switch to safer formulas—just like food companies already use natural ingredients in Europe instead of the chemical dyes they use in America.
“They did it in 2017.”
“The glyphosate-based herbicides, including Roundup, being sold in the 28 countries of the EU is much safer than the Roundup that’s still being sold in the US.”
“They can be regulated much more safely.”
“For example, one of the initiatives that I know the MAHA advocates in DC are hoping to be able to bring into regulation is ending the spraying of Roundup and other herbicides right before the harvest of grain crops and bean crops.”
“It’s called pre-harvest crop desiccation. That’s what accounts for most of the dietary exposure for the general public.”
“By reducing the use of glyphosate-based herbicides by maybe 2% or 3%, we can eliminate 95% of the exposure across 330 million Americans.”
