A new political realignment is happening in America — and it has nothing to do with left vs. right.

Here’s what’s really going on. 🧵

Ask yourself three questions:

- Are people's identity discovered or prescribed?
- Should we be open or closed to the world?
- Is economic dynamism a good thing?

Your answers don’t just say something about party.

They reveal your political tribe — and it's not what you think.

America is no longer debating tax rates, healthcare plans, or other policies.

We're clashing over fundamentally different worldviews.

The real divide today is between liberalism and authoritarianism — it's a fight between those who want freedom vs those who want control.

Liberalism is rooted in four key values:

- Economic freedom
- Epistemic humility
- Cultural pluralism
- Political freedom

These are all grounded in the radical idea that expanding human dignity should be the core pursuit of society.

This was the founding philosophy of America.

The liberal tradition overthrew kings and tyrants.

It ended slavery, expanded suffrage, defeated fascism, and launched civil rights movements.

It also built the freest, most prosperous societies in history.

But it’s under threat today unlike any other period since WW2.

The MAGA movement and its allies — tankies, trads, groypers, conspiracy theorists — aren't united by economics.

They are united by a shared instinct:

A fear of change and a yearning for hierarchy, simplicity, control.

This instinct is authoritarianism.

Authoritarianism isn’t a set of policies — it’s a psychological impulse.

It says:
- Trust the strongman
- Fear the outsider
- Silence the dissenter

It’s ascendant not only because our old institutions failed defend liberal principles — but often failed to embrace them entirely.

The traditional parties, many think tanks, and media are still fighting the old war.

They’re stuck in the old left vs. right paradigm.

But the real conflict is more than just another partisan fight.

It’s about whether human dignity should be expanded — or extinguished.

We don’t simply need another political victory.

We don’t need stronger rulers.

We need a cross-partisan liberal coalition — one that goes on offense.

One that defends democracy, pluralism, and economic progress. One reminds people what American values actually stand for.

That's why we're excited to announce the launch of two new organizations.
