Sun Tzu wrote The Art of War 2,500 years ago.

Today, it sits on the desks of Jeff Bezos, Mark Cuban, and every Fortune 500 CEO.

But most people think it's just an ancient military manual.

Here are the 10 secret tactics Silicon Valley uses to destroy competition: 🧵 Image
Image
Why does ancient warfare matter in the digital age?

Because business IS warfare.

• Market battles instead of physical ones
• Customer acquisition instead of territory
• Competitive advantage instead of tactical superiority

The fundamentals never change. Image
Meet Sun Tzu:

• Chinese military strategist (544-496 BC)
• Never defeated in battle (undefeated record)
• His strategies unified China and toppled dynasties
• The Art of War: Most influential strategy book in history

For 25 centuries, winners have studied his principles. Image
[1/10] "Know your enemy and know yourself."

Amazon didn't just sell books online... they mapped every weakness in traditional retail:

• Slow delivery
• Limited selection
• High overhead costs

Then they systematically attacked each weakness. Image
[2/10] "Rapidity is the essence of war."

Netflix didn't kill Blockbuster with better technology.

They killed them with speed.

When streaming became possible, Netflix moved instantly while Blockbuster hesitated.

In business, speed creates unbeatable competitive advantage. Image
[3/10] "All warfare is based on deception."

Steve Jobs was a master of strategic misdirection:

2007: "Who wants a stylus? You have to get them, put them away... yuck."
2015: Apple Pencil launches to huge success.

He publicly dismissed markets before Apple revolutionized them. Image
[4/10] "The supreme excellence is to subdue the enemy without fighting."

Google didn't beat Yahoo in a head-to-head search war.

They redefined what search meant entirely.

Yahoo organized websites. Google organized all human knowledge. Image
[5/10] "Control the Terrain"

Sun Tzu obsessed over controlling high ground and choosing battlefields.

Amazon built the infrastructure that every other business needs to operate online.

Now their competitors pay Amazon to compete against Amazon. That's controlling the terrain. Image
[6/10] "Avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak."

Tesla didn't attack Ford's truck dominance.

They struck where car companies were complacent: luxury electric sedans.

By the time traditional automakers responded, Tesla owned the premium electric market. Image
[7/10] "Every battle is won before it is fought."

McDonald's doesn't hire the world's best cooks.

They built systems so effective that average people deliver consistent results worldwide.

The preparation (systems) determines the outcome, not individual talent. Image
[8/10] "Wait for your enemy to not wait."

Facebook watched MySpace burn resources trying to be everything to everyone.

Then Facebook struck with laser focus: Connecting college students.

Sometimes the best strategy is waiting for your enemy to defeat themselves. Image
[9/10] "Be like water... shape your course according to the ground."

Apple pivoted from computers to phones to streaming services.

Amazon went from books to everything to cloud computing.

Rigid strategies break. Flexible ones dominate. Image
[10/10] "Look to the effect of combined energy, not individuals."

• Uber doesn't employ millions of drivers.
• Airbnb doesn't own millions of properties.
• YouTube doesn't create billions of videos.

They built platforms that multiply individual efforts into collective power. Image
[11/10] BONUS:

(This quote is my favorite👇)

Sun Tzu's ultimate insight:

"The greatest victory is that which requires no battle."

Amazon's greatest victory isn't beating competitors... it's making competition irrelevant by becoming essential infrastructure. Image
Why This Still Works?

Sun Tzu's principles endure because human psychology hasn't evolved in 2,500 years.

We still:

• Make emotional decisions under pressure
• Seek the path of least resistance
• Fear uncertainty and change

Ancient strategies work on ancient brains.
The Art of War teaches us that the best generals avoid war entirely.

The best business leaders eliminate competition rather than compete.

Another great book I suggest reading is:

"The 33 Strategies of War" by Robert Greene. Image

Nuclear weapons, Google, and AI share the same secret.

They all run on math from a 100 year-old Russian feud.

Two professors hated each other so much their battle created equation that now controls the digital world.

How academic rivalry accidentally built the modern world:🧵 Image
Image
The secret is called a "Markov chain" and it's everywhere.

Every Google search, ChatGPT response and nuclear reactor uses this SAME mathematical principle.

It predicts the future by only looking at right now.

And it exists because two Russian mathematicians hated each other.
Meet the enemies:

Pavel Nekrasov - Deeply religious, powerful, believed math could prove free will and God's existence.

Andrei Markov - Atheist socialist, zero patience for mixing religion with mathematics.

1905 Russia was tearing apart, and even mathematicians picked sides.

Sergey Brin trusted him. Google hired him. Sweden gave him a Nobel Prize.

Geoffrey Hinton earned it all by creating AI.

Now he's quit, spread his money across banks, and says there's a 10-20% chance we're all dead in 20 years.

The godfather's final warning is brutal: Image
When the Nobel Committee called at 1 AM, Hinton thought it was a prank.

"What's the chance a psychologist wins the Physics Nobel?"

"One in two million."

But it was real.

Here's what haunts him now: Image
The timeline that terrifies him most?

"A year ago, I thought superintelligence was 5-20 years away. Now it's 4-19 years."

Then he drops the bomb:

"There's a good chance it'll be here in 10 years or less."

The healthiest brains on Earth belong to people who can't read.

USC scientists spent 15 years proving it.

They found modern "brain optimization" ages your brain 70% faster.

Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

And you'll question every supplement, app, "hack" you've tried:🧵 Image
Image
Meet the Tsimane people of Bolivia:

• Population of 16,000
• Live in Amazon rainforest
• Hunt, fish, farm for survival
• No electricity, no smartphones
• Average 6-7 miles walking daily

And their brains? Youngest ever studied by modern science.
In 2017, Dr. Hillard Kaplan's team did something unprecedented:

They hauled CT scan machines through the Amazon jungle.

Scanned 750 Tsimane brains.

Compared them to 3,000+ industrialized brains.

The results shocked the scientific community... Image

The British government wanted fewer cobras in Delhi.

So they offered money for every dead cobra.

Result? The cobra population EXPLODED.

This "solution" backfired so spectacularly––It's now a fundamental psychological principle studied at Harvard, Stanford, and MIT: 🧵 Image
Image
Colonial India, British Raj era:

Delhi had a cobra problem. Venomous snakes were killing people.

British authorities did what seemed logical:

"We'll pay locals for every dead cobra they bring us."

What could go wrong? Image
At first, it worked:

• Dead cobras poured in
• Payments were given out
• Snake population seemed to decline

But then locals got creative...

They started BREEDING cobras to kill for the bounty.

ZEIGARNIK EFFECT.

Instagram, YouTube, and Netflix exploit it to trigger anxiety, depression, and ADHD-like symptoms.

But this "digital disease" has a cure.

A Soviet woman discovered it in a 1920s Berlin café (and her findings explain why you can't stop using your phone) 🧵 Image
⚠️ WARNING ⚠️

Once you understand this, you'll see manipulation everywhere... work, apps, even relationships.

Use this knowledge to build better relationships and protect others, not to exploit them.
Meet Bluma Zeigarnik:

• Soviet psychologist, University of Berlin (1927)
• Student of Kurt Lewin (father of social psychology)
• Revolutionized our understanding of memory and motivation

The breakthrough happened in a Berlin café... Image

The Stanford Marshmallow Experiment is the most misunderstood study in psychology.

Ivy League schools, top CEOs, and child experts swear by it.

But the lead researcher spent 50 years proving it wrong.

What he discovered will shatter how you think about self-control forever: 🧵 Image
Meet Walter Mischel:

• Stanford psychology professor
• Ran the famous experiment in 1972
• Followed the same kids for 50+ years

Discovered something that contradicts everything we believe about willpower

The real story is far more interesting... Image
What everyone THINKS the study proved:

"Kids who waited for 2 marshmallows had more willpower and became more successful adults."

This story is told in Harvard, CEO boardrooms and parenting books worldwide.

But it's WRONG.
