Houston We Have a Problem! – God’s Holiness

Yesterday we talked about God’s character of love. It’s not something that He says or does, but it is what He is. Well, there is another essence of God that is even deeper than His love… His holiness. He is holy and
He calls us to be holy (1 Thessalonians 4:7).

God’s holiness and purity is His essence that comes even before His love, mercy and grace. Before everything else, God is holy. NOTHING can ever contaminate that holiness. This is why out of His love for us, our Heavenly Father
placed the veil of separation between us and the angel with the flaming sword guarding the way back into the garden of Eden. He did this out of love to protect us. If sin was ever in His presence even for a moment, His essence would immediately destroy it. His holiness is a very
serious matter and one that we don’t always take seriously enough in our journey.
Our Problem

God’s judgment is fast approaching (deep inside we all know it… even Satan knows it very well). Yet we are busy in many ways today trying to fix ourselves or to point out problems in
others and pray to fix them. When Jesus was here among us, He often observed these things in everyone around Him and pointed out that they didn’t understand. They couldn’t fix themselves and should stop focusing on the problems of others (like the woman caught in adultery or the
speck in our brother’s eye). Even if the log in our own eye were only a speck, that speck would be enough to banish us forever from God’s presence.

So, understanding both the nature of our problem and the essence and depth of God’s holiness, it is incumbent on each of us today
to turn to Him in humility, recognize who He is and who we are, and ask for help that only He can give us with our problem. A great picture of this type of recognition is seen when John came into the presence of the Angel of the LORD in Revelation 1:17 and his immediate response
was to fall to the ground on his face at the Angel’s feet. That is the spirit that we all need today to understand and deal with our problem (just as the great apostle John knew that he had a problem).

Today’s verses give us two views into that throne room where God’s angels
testify to the awesome perfection of God’s holiness.
Isaiah Called to Be a Prophet

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with
two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” - Isaiah 6:1-3 6 Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in
the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was
like a flying eagle. 8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor
and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: 11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory
and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.” - Revelation 4:6-11

Why We Fear
As a result of our natural tendencies and the nature of the fallen world around us, we all struggle with where to place our focus. We rely on our own understanding (very limited perspective) of the situations around us and focus on what the world shouts at us every day. Those
things cause us to become anxious because, well, that’s the message of this world.

But when we keep our focus on the LORD and lean on Him always, we find that

He is always there with us

He is always assuring us that He is on His throne and in control

He always reminding us

God’s Protection – Don’t Leave Home Without It
Before describing exactly what God has provided to protect us, Paul first tells why it is so very important for all of God’s people. Before going into what it is, he tells us about the nature of the attacks that we are up against (deceptive strategies). Before telling us about
the pieces of God’s armor, he warns us who the real invisible enemy is. Before all of the above, Paul tells us to put it on (don’t leave home without it).

After all of this, Paul goes through and lists out each and every one of those pieces of armor telling why they are

Love is in God’s Name
One of the mistakes that we all have a tendency to make is that we put God into a little box that we can understand. We do this in so very many ways. This morning I invite us to consider Agape, God’s ultimate love. The greatest commandment calls for us to love God with all of our
heart, soul, mind, and strength. Next we are called to love our neighbor more than ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-40)

We are a work in progress. God calls us to be like Him because we were created in His image and at one time before we corrupted ourselves, we were like Him. Let’s

Equality for Believers – Comparing Ourselves
This is the theme that the LORD placed on my heart early this morning. Even as strong believers, we have a tendency to compare ourselves with others (both with believers and non-believers). It’s a lingering part of our fallen nature and it is a true blessing when we understand
this tendency is there because it helps us to live and to pray in very powerful ways.

To illustrate this, He pointed me to this intimate scene that takes place at the end of the Gospel of John. It is the third time that John records the resurrected Jesus showing Himself to

Choices and Ramifications
This is a continuation of yesterday’s devotional with a closer look at the choices that God calls us all to make as He sends people to warn us (remember 1 Kings 18:21). Everything is a choice and has ramifications.

God chooses (is not forced) to do what He does and His choices
always have ramifications. Those ramifications are ALWAYS for our benefit. Some of those key choices that He makes include:

Love
Grace
Mercy
Sacrifice
Forgiveness and Reconciliation

He chooses to do all of these things NOT because He is forced to and NOT for His own personal

Order Out of Chaos
We serve today the God of order… the God of purpose. However, because of our tendency to make poor choices, we live in a world of chaos and confusion. The bible is filled with major and memorable examples of where God pulled order out of chaos; hope out of desperate futility;
and solutions when all seemed lost. His plan and purpose for us has been established and will never fail.

In Genesis 3 Satan thought he had ended our story when he tricked us into walking away into rebellion and division. Then soon after, we further corrupted ourselves to what
