Hoeflation and the obesity of society aside, it's also worth considering how, logistically, spouses are even supposed to meet in the first place. Essentially, people's options are college, work, city life, social media, and the doordash-dating services.

The effect is causal, and by the most-conservative estimate, White flight can account for around 1/4th of the total population loss from central cities in the mid-twentieth century.

As for work and college, it cannot be sufficiently emphasized to what extent progressive social mores are reflexively hostile to relationship formation.
