Hosting #RyePro week starting today!
We will be sending out info on growing hybrid fall rye.

Now is the perfect time to plan fall crops!
It can be seeded on broadleaf / pulse / cereal stubble.
If going on cereal stubble - be sure to kill vol growth so it won’t compete with it in the fall.
If wheat stubble - risk of vol wheat if hitting milling markets.

Why grow hybrid rye?
1. Allelopathy - suppresses wild oats
Physical growth stresses weeds also as it grows so fast in the spring.
Often when seeded early (=stand is good and tillered in fall) people don’t spray in crop herbicides.
Picture from March 12th.

2. Tolerates dry conditions, even if it’s a dry spring and moisture comes later, it will add rows to the head.
Fibrous root is a scavenger for nutrients and water.
Spreads seasonal moisture risk.
#RyePro Image
3. Hybrid fall rye has better winter hardiness, nutrient & water efficiency.
#RyePro Image
4. Market - has grown in feed and ethanol.
Milling and distilling are possibilities (more SK and MB due to locations)
Ethanol has been a buyer & now the feed market is growing as some feedlots are feeding rye.
#RyePro Image
5. Erosion control is excellent when seeded on time (late Aug to mid Sept) Image
Hybrid fall rye is sold by the unit, 1 unit is 1 million viable seeds.
Farmers usually target 1 unit per ac. (23 plants)
If the crop is for forage use, organics, or you are seeding later in the fall the use rate can be higher than. Some, when seeding early may seed at 0.9 unit.
#RyePro
Ideal seeding times for hybrid rye
Central or North prairies = Aug 20 - Sept 15
Southern prairies = Aug 25 - Sept 20
Later can be ok but it’s ideal to have it’s better to have it tiller in the fall.
Rye can germinate in surprisingly dry soil, but if seeing into dust, make sure it’s all in dust so when rain or snow comes it’s even. #RyePro
Rye doesn't suffer from green bridge (wheat / winter wheat can transmit the wheat streak mosaic virus)
So you can seed rye on cereal stubble.

Make sure vol crop doesn’t compete in the fall with the rye by killing volunteers before seeding rye.
If going on cereal stubble there is some risk of volunteer cereals in the crop in some situations, so talk to potental buyers. For feed or ethanol it’s not a problem. #RyePro
A residual broadleaf herbicide in the fall can help with maintaining a weed free field and can reduce the need to spray in the spring.
Goldwing is registered and many others are also.
#RyePro
Rye grows fast in the spring, and some herbicides may be harder on it vs others.
Here are a list of actives that are safer.
Spraying early / lower actives of some herbicides also helps.
We often use OcTTain
Not all wild oat products are registered on rye but may not be needed. #RyeProImage
It’s ideal to spray early or not at all if the crop is thick enough.
Leaving tracks in crop from a May spray are where ergot forms due to later pollination.
#RyePro Image
Fungicides are not usually needed to be a #RyePro
Fall rye flowers so much earlier vs other crops it beats the FHB risk usually.
The pollen needs to fly during flowering so making it sticky with a fung may not help pollination.
If doing a fungicide, wait until after flowering is done , this may help it stay green longer.
Reducing ergot in rye!
Varieties can play a part, some have higher or lower incidence. +
Narrow row spacing, slow seeding speed, early seeding, seed to soil contact, no tracks in crop when spraying (go early spring), fungicide post flower if doing one. Seed 1 unit per ac #RyePro Image
We put down all the N and P at seeding.
We don’t use ESN as its releases too slow for rye.
Use a coated urea if worried about leeching.
The N use curve is very steep on rye vs winter wheat or spring crops.
#RyePro Image
Volunteer rye risk next year?
We grow a pulse or brassica after rye and make sure we kill all that grows with a group 1 herbicide. You could do 2 years non cereal if really concerned but we find 1 is ok if on top of vol rye.
But don’t go to a winter wheat or triticale right away in rotation for contamination risk , so either go back to rye or a spring cereal
#RyeProImage
Rotation:
Ideally following an oilseed is nice due to stubble to trap snow for insulating, but many follow a pulse crop.
Cereals like wheat or barley can also be good, small risk these overwinter or are in the rye crop (not an issue for feed or ethanol or forage)
#RyePro Image
#RyePro grain markets!:
The feed market has grown, its price sensitive but can use large volumes & ethanol is similar.
Milling and distilling are others, distilling has slowed down recently. Image
Varieties!
We love the drought tolerance and the standability of SU Cossani.

It seems to do great in light soil and has been one of our top sellers.

Forage!
Hybrid rye can be taken at boot in late May for high quality and then sprayed, & re planted to a forage or a gain barley early June.
Here is forage demo info:
If doing this make sure no rye re grows in a grain crop as a few random plants are a risk for ergot in a barley crop.
#RyeProstampseeds.com/winter-cereals…
@blairbalog @stampgreg @FPGenetics @kwscanada Milk timing is when beef silage comes off, usually mid June to early July. (About 7-10 days ahead of a triticale)
Leaving it past milk won’t gain much tonnage and becomes harder to cut and pack.
Lasts seasons milk timing results
#RyeProstampseeds.com/winter-cereals…
If you want to seed hybrid rye early in season (like now) and graze , make sure to graze the crop down in September so it goes into winter proper size and has time to recover in October.
Fall graze may not take yield away,
Spring graze it will take some yield away / make it head out shorter. Spring it grows so fast that it can get ahead of the animals! #RyePro
@blairbalog @stampgreg @FPGenetics @kwscanada Allelopathic effect from the volunteer rye:
If you have a cover crop or a volunteer rye, it can impact a canola.
Kill your cover crop 7-10 days before seeding a canola crop for example.
#RyePro
@blairbalog @stampgreg @FPGenetics @kwscanada Seed can be booked now, we plan to carry inventory of fall crops as each season is so different, allowing us more flexibility in bookings vs spring crops.
