Great take from @parismarx on Mark Carney's use of "decarbonized oil". This is exactly the kind of corporate greenwashing that @DonDavies teamed up with MPs from other parties to ban. 🧵 1/3
Last spring, these MPs worked to give Canada's Competition Act real teeth by forcing companies to PROVE environmental claims with evidence. Oil lobbyists called it "vague and overreaching."
Translation: they can't lie with impunity anymore. 2/3
The same should be true for politicians who parrot fossil fuel propaganda, including our PM. Big Oil isn't just polluting our air, land and water: it has spread its slick coating all over our national discourse. Canada's political speech needs to be decarbonized! 3/3

With Trump’s brute force attack on Canada’s economy underway, I’m finding myself frustrated by the lack of political imagination in our national debate.
🧵...
At the same time, I’m also energized by the opportunity to advance an inspiring vision: the transformative policies we have needed for years!
This week there was a bright spot - our leader @JagmeetSingh announced that an NDP government would bring back the Electric Vehicle Subsidy canceled by the Liberals this month, doubling it to $10,000 for Made-in-Canada EVs.
When I called this out months ago, Selina Robinson responded, "It was investigated, action was taken".
Since UBC had done nothing, she could only have been referring to the fact that Hillel had fired the person responsible.
What's the significance of this at this point?
2/
Selina Robinson, a front-bench government minister, was speaking as if she was Hillel BC.
This was not an isolated incident: for 4 months after Oct. 7 she acted openly as an ally and activist for the whole ecosystem of pro-Israel lobby groups.

The fog of war lies thick all around. It’s so hard to sort out pebbles of fact from mountains of propaganda.
But here’s one thing I know: I’m just appalled.
Appalled by what Hamas unleashed: the slaughter of civilians, homes drenched in terror and raw vengeance. 1/8
Appalled by Israel’s government on a rampage of revenge: publicly announcing war crimes, then delivering them with unprecedented ferocity (though this is far from the first time). 2/8
Appalled by how rich countries like Canada, the US and those of the EU are reverting to simple-minded, one-sided Israel-right-or-wrong-ism.
The dead and the rubble piling up in Gaza are the bitter fruit of this cynical, simple-minded worldview. 3/8
Here's a 🧵 with the 2 minute speech I made at the #BCNDP convention just now.
@Ashleyzarbatany & others tried emergency resolutions and amendments to get tough resolutions against fossil fuels and supporting Wet'suwet'en land defenders to the floor.
They were all shut down.
Friends and delegates, as so many of you know, there is a pipeline-sized elephant in the room at this convention, and in this province.
And it’s time to speak its name aloud: it is our government’s continued support of fossil fuel expansion in the very teeth of a cascading climate emergency.
Getting a lot of media requests to comment on the NDP grassroots Wet'suwet'en solidarity statement.
The story is getting framed in predictable/sensationalist ways, so I'll say what I have to say in this thread.
The story is not about a conflict in the NDP, or attacks on leaders (much as those headlines get clicks.)
This is a story about the conflict created by unneeded fossil fuel projects that are dividing communities and COOKING THE PLANET.
In BC, we are reeling from fires (made worse by shitty logging practices) and heat (that killed 600 people) and floods (made worse by the fires) causing TENS OF BILLIONS in damage, lives and livestock and livelihoods swept away.
