Saw a post where @DennyBurk incidentally dehumanizes two children in his ire at Chip & Joanna.

Moralistic litmus tests are revealing.

I’ve never seen Christian concern re: normalization of consumption, discontentment & greed on display in home reno shows. 🧵
I’ve not seen discussion of how this forms idolatrous souls to expect luxury when so many go without food & clothing.

Disappointed fans seem capable of overlooking that as well as the fact that many unmarried couples on the show were cohabitating. 2/
They were able to see that it was a TV show not a church

& that ppl who aren’t Christians are uninterested in pietism or moral beliefs of Christianity.

It’s never been our task to isolate, exclude & erase ppl b/c we perceive immoral, greedy or idolatrous. specks in their eye 3/ Image
What business is it of ours to judge those outside the church?

All this while we have neglected to respond to ppl *within the church* who have preyed on most vulnerable.

I will take your concerns about sexual immorality seriously when you flip tables over predatory pastors. 4/ Image
I will believe Christians care about children & families when we stop minimizing the evil that has been done in God’s name.

When we listen to survivors & evangelicals & all whose faith we’ve shipwrecked.

5/
Hatred & contempt never showed anyone the Good News of God’s love.

Calling hatred “love” doesn’t make it so.

Whatever you think of ppl’s sexual choices, they are *people*, in this case including two children whose perhaps first & only taste of Christianity will be contempt. 6/
Religious ppl have always gotten mad about Jesus eating w/those they perceived to be sinners & tax collectors. Tainted by association. He is never punitive enough for our liking.

Unmerciful servants delighting in grace when we receive it & big mad when it’s shown to others. 7/
I guess it’s unsurprising that religious ppl today would be mad about the Body of Christ rubbing shoulders w/a family that has two gay dads.

IDK what the end game there is, though— increasingly narrowing communities that only grant access to the “right” kind of sinners? 8/
Only times Jesus got indignant *w/His disciples* was when they hindered ppl from getting access to Him.

@chipgaines & @joannagaines decided not to gatekeep *in the marketplace*

Christian rage demanding they recant reveals why some will never set foot in a church again.

Expanded on these thoughts in a long form post here today. Image

“God hit me upside the head with a 2X4.” I’ve heard this sentiment, accompanied by commiserating laughter, in numerous sermons, often delivered with self-deprecating humor, much like its cousins: “Sometimes God needs to give us a spanking!” or “Jesus took my licking for me. 🧵 Image
The idea seems to be: God deals that way with His children, so surely human parents should as well. But is that true? Is that the way God deals with His children? 2/
Christian parents are told that God requires them to spank, typically via prooftexted verses from Proverbs. Heb 12 is also used to mandate spanking small children & suggest it is somehow godly, something that requires a uniquely eva equation, where “discipline”= “spanking. 3/ Image

Tripp's book "Shepherding A Child's Heart" is full of problematic theology & the prosperity gospel parenting promises @ostrachan decried in yesterday's post

Yet it is STILL recommended widely to parents. I've done a chpt by chpt deep dive youtube.com/watch?v=34aOPG…

But let's 🧐
🧵 x.com/ostrachan/stat…
Titular thesis of SACH rests on parental responsibility & presumed ability to go deeper than shaping behaviors & into a godlike rearrangement of a child’s heart.

Stowaway anthropological & theological claims rest on a primary & ever-present theme: children are full of sin. 2/
Parents are not told Tripp's framework rests on a theo concept called total depravity, one that not every Christian accepts.

Instead, total depravity is portrayed as a given, w/anecdotes where children are described as adults-with-sinful-motivations in little bodies. 3/

This went viral right before Christmas & had me thinking how evangelical expectations re: family relationships set the stage for future disappointment.

Holidays where ppl are left asking: Why is this so difficult? How did things turn out this way? 🧵 Image
.@kkramermcginnis & I explore some of these dynamics in our forthcoming book The Myth of Good Christian Parenting, but here I want to consider the implications of the so-common-we-barely-notice-it framing that parenting can secure spiritual & even eternal outcomes. 2/
Nancy's starting assumption=parents can and should expect to pass on their religious convictions to their children. Christian adult children=a parental success.

Ofc Christian parents hope their children share religious convictions, but can parents secure faith outcomes? 3/

Let's pick up where we left off.

Look over there at the Mount of Olives. Do you see that company of weeping ppl—barefoot King David, 600 of his men & most of the royal court? The mighty man Ittai? They have left the city before Absalom returns.

That scent on the air? 🧵
Sacrifices, offered by Abiathar the priests as Zadok leads the Levites and the ark after David.

But David sends the ark back. This carries hints of the old David, the one who wouldn't raise his hand against God's anointed Saul.

David doesn't know if his rule is over. 2/
He also sends Zadok & Abiathar (and their sons) and Hushai the Arkite back...as spies.

As they go, they encounter friends (?) and foes. They meet Ziba, servant of Jonathan's son Mephibosheth & Shimei, who curses David "for all the spilled blood of the house of Saul." 3/

Delighted to see responses from ppl being like: I'm going to pick up my Bible again! For real, though, QT thread only captures a sliver of the political intrigue at play.

1/2 Samuel & books of Kings & Chronicles read like a game of thrones. 🧵
David's sons are ofc vying for the throne & 2 Sam weaves these political machinations together in ways we sometimes just read right over.

The storyteller takes us almost directly from Bathsheba/Uriah story to Amnon/Tamar (not coincidentally; this is to show the parallels). 2/
One of David's sons, Amnon, lusts after his half-sister Tamar (sister of Absalom who is a key player later on).

Amnon's "friend" & cousin Jonadab helps him plan how to get Tamar. "Pretend to be sick, Amnon," & your father will come see you. 3/

I find it so poignant to consider how the same Mary who offers her iconic "yes" to God later comes with Jesus' brothers to take Him home, because they all think He's lost His mind. 🧵 Colors by Brittany Richardson & pencils by Brian Gage
Mothers testify: you don't forget the details of birthing a new human being into the world.

We get an abridged version of Mary’s recollections on pgs of gospels—treasured details alongside other mysterious, wonder-full moments: magi & shepherds & aged prophets in the temple. 2/
Perhaps Mary spoke less about the traumatic times—the breath-stealing fleeing in the night or the panicked heart-stopping multi-day search for tween Jesus.

She herself witnessed His miraculous works beginning with her request at the wedding of Cana. 3/
