Was there an architectural blueprint that shaped the RajaRaja Chola's grand vision? π€
The answer might lie in an even older, lesser-known marvel! π
This ancient Shiva temple, near Panruti, Tamil Nadu, is believed to be the conceptual blueprint,
1/
a precursor that ignited Raja Raja Chola's imagination for the iconic Big Temple.
Veerataneshwar Temple at Thiruvathigai!
Legend says Lord Shiva, as Tripurantaka, destroyed three powerful cities of demons here. The temple's unique chariot-like structure
2/
is believed to symbolize this cosmic victory! ποΈ
While some credit Pallava King Mahendravarman I for its origins (7th centuryCE), it was significantly expanded & enhanced by the mighty Cholas. Imagine a temple evolving over centuries, witnessing the rise & fall of empires!
3/
The great saint, Appar (Thirunavukkarasar), originally a Jain, was miraculously cured of a painful illness right here after his sister brought him to pray to Shiva. This transformation marked his return to Saivism and the start of his divine hymns!

The Big Connection: ππ
How did it inspire the Big Temple?
The Veerataneshwar Temple's unique tapering design and stone arrangement, which minimized its shadow to fall within its base or walls, likely inspired the Big Temple's architecture.
5/
Located in Thiruvathigai near Panruti, Cuddalore dt, TN, it's easily accessible by road from major cities.
So next time you marvel at the Brihadeeswarar Temple, spare a thought for the Veerataneshwar Temple. Ancient wonders lay the foundation for a timeless masterpiece.

Most people think it's a Western concept from the Romans, but ancient Indian wisdom, tells a fascinating, much older story.
1/
Ancient Indian wisdom (Vedic Jyotisha Shastra) had sophisticated time units like 'ghati'/nazhigai (in tamil) (= 24 mins).
A day was sunrise to sunrise, divided into two halves by 'sandhya' (junctions).
2/
Each half-day was divided into 12 'horas' (sounds familiar, right? π). Totaling 24 'horas' in a day, linked to the 12 zodiac constellations. And here's the kicker: each 'hora' was assigned the rulership of a specific planet (graha).
