"Whoever saves a life saves the whole world," originally from the Talmud, is often cited to demonstrate the "peacefulness" of Islam. But the Quran (the "eternal, unchangeable word of Allah") says something different:
(Sura 5:32) "For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind,
and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. [...]"
So killing is expressly permitted if it is a matter of revenge/vendetta or punishment for "corruption in the earth"! The verse immediately following explains what is meant by this: acting against the religion and its representatives.
(Sura 5:33) "The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. [...]"
And in case anyone is still plagued by pangs of conscience:
(Sura 8:17) "Ye (Muslims) slew them not, but Allah slew them. And thou (Muhammad) threwest not when thou didst throw, but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair test from Him. [...]"
