1/ I’m hesitant to dignify desperate attempts to distract from the Epstein scandal with a response. But @DNIGabbard shouldn’t be allowed to push out dangerous conspiracy theories and call former presidents traitors unchecked. So here are my thoughts:
2/ In 2017, the IC wrote: “Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the U.S. Presidential Election. Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency.”
3/ This may be the most examined and re-examined assessment in the IC’s history. Over the last decade four different investigations have reaffirmed the conclusion, including a 2020 unanimous, bipartisan report by the Senate Intelligence Committee, led in part by @SecRubio.
4/.@DNIGabbard is now trying to rewrite history, casting doubt on these well established conclusions and accusing President Obama and other former officials of manipulating intelligence to misrepresent Putin’s support for Trump during the 2016 election.
5/This lie is contradicted by the 2017 ICA and a 2021 assessment that found Putin also preferred Trump in the 2020 election. It's also obvious to anyone who has watched Trump praise Putin, invite him to target Clinton’s emails, demean NATO, and walk back support for Ukraine.
6/ The IC and Obama Admin consistently said that there was no evidence that Russia impacted the 2016 vote count, but that the IC did uncover a concerted campaign to undermine Clinton’s candidacy, including hacking emails accounts and leaking their content.
7/ The DNI is conveniently conflating the two findings to paint an entirely dishonest picture of conspiracy and treason. Unsurprising from an Administration that uses chaos, distraction and lies, but very dangerous.
8/ If @DNIGabbard had actual evidence of any real crime, we would see charges pressed. We won’t. Ever. Why? Because Gabbard’s charges would be laughed out of any courtroom in the country. Let that be the test.

Judge Wilkinson (Reagan appointee) writing for the 4th Circuit, turns back the lawless Trump administration like a Greek hero. Absolute poetry: 1/5
“Now the branches come too close to grinding irrevocably against one another in a conflict that promises to diminish both. This is a losing proposition all around.” 2/5
“The Judiciary will lose much from the constant intimations of its illegitimacy, to which by dint of custom and detachment we can only sparingly reply. The Executive will lose much from a public perception of its lawlessness and all of its attendant contagions." 3/5
Local elections are notorious for their low turnout. But this year, Tuesday’s voting won’t just be about school boards and town budgets; it will make a difference, maybe THE difference, to our imperiled democracy. 1/
Had you heard of Brad Raffensperger before the 2020 election? Probably not. Raffensperger is the Georgia Secretary of State who resisted President Trump’s demands that he “find 11,780 votes” to keep him in the Oval Office. 2/
A guy you’d never heard of turned out to be a bulwark against a coup d’etat. For that act, Mr. Raffensperger’s life is regularly threatened by his fellow Republicans.
Catching my breath after the attack on the Capitol, I’m reflecting on all that we have to do. First, everyone involved in the insurrection, from the President to Josh Hawley to the Lectern Guy must be held accountable. That appears to be happening. But... 1/9
Long after Lectern and Viking Guy are in jail, and ex-President Trump is wrestling with various prosecutors, we will be struggling with the toxic apocalyptic violent hate religion that is their legacy. 2/9
Second, this isn’t just Lectern and Viking Guy and a deranged President. This letter was sent by a parent in New Canaan whose child’s teacher had offered suggestions on how to talk to kids about the attack. Every sentence is provably untrue and filled with hate and violence. 3/9
This Committee has always succeeded in compartmentalizing the critical oversight work we do for the American people. Today, that Rubicon has been crossed.
@HouseIntel Not a single soldier, CIA officer, or NSA analyst would dream of skipping work because they're angry about something that the President or his critics said or did.
They would be true to their oaths and to the idea of selfless duty.
They whipped themselves into berserk frenzies over both, lied to the public about them, and demanded their elimination.
Only when elimination is a real possibility do they sober up and realize the costs of what they are demanding. 2/4
So they lie some more. About their commitment to protecting people with pre-existing conditions. About how Iran never intended to abide by JCPOA. (They did)
There are two critical questions around any belligerent action:
1) Is it right and good? 2) Is it in our best interest?
Regarding Soleimani, having a strong opinion on 1) does not obviate the need for an answer on 2). And right now, no one with any wisdom has one. 1/5
If you think taking out bad guys is it’s own justification, you need to reflect on the chaos that followed our destruction of Hussein and Qaddafi, neither of whom commanded nation-states when they died. 2/5
And, while I haven’t issued this reminder since President Trump called off the raid on Iran, the Constitution vests Congress, and only Congress, with the decision to go to war. 3/5
