The Stone of Destiny or Jacobs “pillow” Stone, has a long history and dates back to the time of Jacob (Israel), who was the grandson of Abraham. In Genesis 28, we read of Jacob using the stone as a pillow to sleep in a place called Luz, in which he had a dream where God reaffirms promises made to Abraham and Isaac.
“The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your seed. And your seed shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south. And in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in every place where you go, and will bring you again into this land, for I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken of to you”
When Jacob wakes up from his dream, he takes the stone he had used as a pillow and anoints it with oil and renames the place Bethel or “house of God”. Twenty-two years later, Jacob returns to Bethel with the stone where God appears to him again and changes his name to Israel which means “sons ruling with God”. While adding to his promises to Abraham.
“And God said to him, ‘Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be called Jacob any more, but Israel shall be your name.’ And He called his name Israel. And God said to him, ‘I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall be from you, and kings shall come out of your loins. And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and to your seed after you I will give the land”
There we see Gods promise to Israel that future Kings will come from his loins. One future king being David, who was also of the Tribe of Judah. God made a covenant with David, ensuring him that his kingdom and throne would be established forever.
"Your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established for ever."
"Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."
The stone was brought from Syria to Egypt by King Gathelus, who then fled to Spain following the defeat of the Egyptian army. A descendant of Gathelus brought the stone to Ireland, and was crowned on it as King of Ireland. And from Ireland, the stone moved with the invading Scots to Argyll and to the village of Scone. Which was then used as part of the crowning ceremonies.
John de Balliol was the last Scottish king crowned on it, in 1292, before Edward I of England invaded Scotland in 1296 and moved the stone to London. There, at Westminster Abbey in 1307, he had a special throne, called the Coronation Chair, built so that the stone fitted under it. This was to be a symbol that kings of England would be crowned as kings of Scotland also.
🎄On Christmas morning 1950 the stone was stolen from Westminster Abbey by Scottish nationalists who took it back to Scotland. Four months later it was recovered and restored to the abbey. In 1996 the British government returned the stone to Scotland, exactly 700 years after it was removed to England.
When it was returned to Scotland, it was taken to Edinburgh Castle. Otherwise known as Castle Rock, a stronghold that was once the residence of Scottish monarchs. The stone resides in the Crown Room in Edinburgh Castle to this day.
The kings of Israel were crowned on the stone. This was the pillar or coronation stone on which the kings of the house of David were crowned. God said there would always be a descendant of King David sitting on David’s throne. A significant portion of the inhabitants of Scotland were descended from Israelites.
