🧵My jaw is still on the fucking floor after reading Jenn Counter’s “Rules of Offensive Influence” — an unapologetic playbook for psychological warfare — that is published on Columbia’s website.

I'm going to share some excerpts, then post the whole thing.

As you read, keep in mind, Counter serves as both a “Subject Matter Expert” for Safe Reach Solutions — the firm overseeing GHF’s operations in Gaza — and, according to Columbia's website, a “Course Associate” in the Strategic Communications department at the School of Professional Studies.
She introduces her 16 rules for "strategizing and implementing an influence campaign" by clarifying that "even tactical military propaganda should support a longer-term strategy and goal to be most impactful." Image
Rule 1 is "Respect your adversary." Two is "Have a long-term strategy." Three is where it gets interesting: "Identify ways to overcome the positive emotions, defensive positions, and the audience’s 'lizard brain.' Use emotion to capture the audience and bring them in." Image
Four through six, you can read on your own. Here's seven: "Establish 3 to 5 concepts that will be used to drive a wedge in your adversary’s efforts to grow their base of support, maintain control, garner funding, and operate freely. Concepts should be based on historical ills that plague the group, community, or society and tied directly to your adversary. These concepts are used to discredit the adversary and their place within the community."Image
8: "Know your enemy, their culture, their society and history ... In an American context, race/ethnicity, north vs. south, pro-life vs. pro-choice, and big government vs. libertarianism are all concepts which cause division. Other societies have similar divisions which are both emotional and deep seated. The key is to work with local actors to understand these divisions and how they
can be leveraged to meet your goals."Image
Nine is about "Hope." Ten is about "layering" your concepts across outlets and groups. Here's 11: "The goal is not to counter your adversary. Your goal is to
dominate your adversary. This is done by keeping them on the defensive. Do not give them the time, bandwidth, or opportunity to go offensive. By rotating concepts and messages, the adversary is forced to keep up with your timeline, your message, your pace of operations and not their own. By constantly responding to your messages, they are unable to project their own and (hopefully) use up their valuable resources trying to convince audiences your message is wrong."Image
Twelve is about "welcoming defectors from the other side." As you read thirteen, remember that Counter works for the group that replaced the UN's aid distribution system after helping to smear it as Hamas (and continues to do so). 13: "Plan to fill the power vacuum. Toppling the adversary is one thing, having a plan to backfill them is another. People need to know and buy into the new leader, structure, organization, etc prior to the adversary being overtaken. In best case scenario, the option you provide should instill hope in the future and inspire people to overcome the adversary. The backfill needs to be established and ready to go well before the adversary is on the decline or removed all together.Image
The rest are relatively innocuous—though as I read sixteen--“adjust the strategy based on evaluation"--I'm thinking about the GHF’s abrupt messaging pivot this past week: suddenly acknowledging the deteriorating hunger crisis while blaming the UN for “abandoning 950 trucks of aid to rot in the sun”—a line blasted out thousands of times on Twitter.Image
Those are Jenn Counter’s sixteen rules of offensive influence—perfect for indoctrinating young minds at Columbia, or running a propaganda campaign for a murderous “aid” operation in Gaza. Here's the whole article: sps.columbia.edu/news/rules-off…
Apologies if that was messy or hard to follow—I wrote it in a bit of a huff. I’m going to take a step back and contextualize all of this against what’s happening in Gaza in my newsletter this Sunday: infinitejaz.substack.com
Two final things. First, props again to the Twitterless Jack Poulson, whose Substack deep dive into the PR machine behind UG Solutions kicked off my own inquiry — and who flagged Jenn Counter as someone worth looking into. You can read his piece here: substack.com/@jackpoulson/p…
And finally, POWER to the young student activists at Columbia who put their entire futures on the line to stand up against genocide, in the face of an institution that sought to absolutely crush them. You are all genuine heroes, and one day that will be conventional wisdom.

Explain it to me like I’m five: if the one thing drawing protesters to synagogues is settlement fairs, isn’t it reasonable to assume their issue is with the settlement fairs? If they were showing up at any random synagogues, that would be different. But they are not
The discourse is so fucking stupid. Deal with the facts
It cannot be said enough that Jewish activists in the West Bank are treated with nothing but kindness, because they’re not trying to kill the local residents. It’s very simple

This creep started attacking me after I posted that Chabad is complicit in genocide, but that this in no way justified an ISIS massacre at a public Hanukkah event they hosted.

Now, he has been frantically smearing me for 24 hours straight because I advised Cameron Kasky to get to the West Bank by way of Tel Aviv, where he’d be less likely to get turned away than he would through Jordan. This is the same advice he was given by the many Palestinians I put him in touch with. I wouldn’t expect ‘Bad Empanada’ to know such things, since he admitted he’s never attempted to visit Palestine since they’d “never let him in.”

To be clear, this person knows nothing about me and has gotten virtually every detail of my life and work wrong. The lies and smears are tedious enough, but it’s the pathetic bravado of someone who records YouTube videos from his basement all day that really gets me.

A miserable, cynical liar of the first order who cares about no one but himself.Image

It is unfortunate that people like this have any platform at all, but I take great comfort in knowing that there are Palestinians all across the West Bank who consider me family, and who would laugh this fucking loser right out of town.
Literally nothing about this is correct lol. Just bizarre Image

🧵 For the past two years, I’ve been reporting on how Israel uses archaeology as a tool of land theft and de facto annexation in the West Bank. Today, Ynet published an inside account from the IDF’s archaeology unit—the Israeli Civil Administration’s Staff Office for Archaeology—describing a “dramatic transformation” that has accelerated in recent years. “Today, we would never give up. Any place I want to excavate, I excavate.”Image
Image
Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, recently seen sporting a gold noose on his lapel, has no time for euphemisms: Israel’s archaeological project, he says, is about "uncovering our ownership of this land.” Like I wrote before, "an effective machine for converting archaeological discovery into territorial power." (2nd screenshot from my writing.)Image

The doubled budget and new resources and authority are meant to affect "not only the future, but also the past."

Or, in my own words: The struggle over the ruins is also a struggle over "the history those ruins speak to, and what they say about who gets to live on this land.” Image

I have some incredible news to share. Today, after 9.5 agonizing months, Mohammed Zaher Ibrahim was released from Israel’s Ofer Prison and into his father’s arms. The Israeli military had no right to take him in the first place, and the family credits the relentless grassroots campaign that kept up the diplomatic pressure to free him. He’s in rough shape, but okay, and on his way to the hospital for treatment. Once he’s discharged, his mom, dad, brother, and sisters will have his favorite meal and a very belated 16th-birthday celebration waiting for him at home. I’ll share more details soon.

Now that Mohammed is free, the family is asking all his supporters to keep fighting for the hundreds of Palestinian children still unjustly trapped in Israeli military prisons.

The family requests privacy for now.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone — lots to be thankful for.Image

Mohammed seeing his father for the first time.
Mohammed did not know that his first cousin, Sayfollah Musallet, had been beaten to death by settlers in July. It was one of the big questions hanging over his release. They just told him now. Bittersweet day, to say the least.

🧵A fascinating—and revealing—Hebrew-only piece today in the settlers’ outlet Arutz Sheva, written by extremist settler Elisha Yered, laying out the settlers’ systematic strategy of building illegal outposts on Palestinian land to expand Jewish control of the West Bank. Image
He starts by noting that every faction of the settler movement—from the violent hilltop youths to the leaders of the official settlement councils—works in close coordination. So much for the idea of a few fringe extremists. Image
He dives right into the debate I’ve been tweeting about recently: those who believe in ethnic cleansing through authorized, state-backed settlement construction vs. those who believe they need to be completely unshackled from the state to seize land on their own terms. Image

Day after the attack: Peaceful olive farming across Turmus’ayya today. The Israeli army is going around to different fields asking farmers if they’re okay (lol). Normally I wouldn’t share a video like this, but idk… I feel like it’s a reminder that real boots on the ground reporting can have an impact?
We are at the exact scene of the attack. At the very end of this video an Israeli police commander shows up. He recognized me and wants to ask me a few questions… they’re “investigating” yesterday’s violence.
Ran into the Israeli soldier who offered me safe passage before jetting as the settlers arrived. He saw the video too and was very very sorry it happened.
