A lot of people dont think theyre being ableist or siding with eugenics because they think they should be able to control others and what their lives look like. A lot of the issues they wish to ascribe to disabilities, such as quality and duration of life, are actually due to how
Society treats people with disabilities. No matter how much you account for or try to prevent it, bad things will find you in life. You will struggle, you will suffer, and often you will have no one to take accountability for it. In a just society this would be when we lift each
Other up and find ways to compensate. My glasses are a disability aid because my eye sight has been deteriorating since I was young. My shower chair allows me to bath without feeling like im on death's door everytime. My cane lets me walk even when my joints are in pain.
Sure, it would be nice if I never needed them, but I live in reality so I adjust and grow as needed. The idea that you can edit your children's potential disabilities away is a rejection of reality. You can say its because you want them to have a better life, but thats putting
The possibility of them having a difficult life on them and the disability, rather than the society that should be coming together to support them. Its a rejection of all the possibilities you dont want to see or handle for a world where you get to control how life looks for them
Its a tempting thing, but its also symbolic of why humanity is in the spot its in now. We're so focused on the idea that we have to reject and control reality that we've overlooked the clear solution of finding ways to work with what we have to make things better for everyone.
