There's a lot of encouraging news the past week or so about major countries recognizing, or maybe recognizing Palestine in the coming months/ in 2025.
But I see a major tripwire in the language about future Canada recognition. The future Palestinian said they want to recognize it must not include Hamas in the government going forward, and must be "demilitarized".
The reason this makes me smile (in a bad way) it's cuz it's currently occupied by a military power. It's been under a blockade <ahem> by a military power since 2007.
So.. to imagine there's no counterbalancing military force protect Palestine from Israel in the future after "the new state is established and recognized" is a really weird gaping hole.
I mean let's be real. If you're sitting at a table at any early or late phase of a deal like this being hammered out.. a gaping hole like that I cannot persist in a viable deal.
And for anyone who maybe taking me the wrong way, I don't want to hurt Israel, but settlements have to stop and the border needs to be respected in a way it has not been since 1967.
And while we're calling the balls and strikes (in the parlance of Elisa Slotkin 😂) .. there's no real talk about codifying a border. 😡 Give me a break folks.
Cuz, under current international law the status of approximately 600,000 Jews living in the West Bank right now is a big important question unto itself for any such deal to be finalized in a meaningful way for both sides
