If you’re African and you don’t know about Sheikh Uthman dan Fodio, you’re missing one of the most powerful stories in Islamic history 🧵
He wasn’t just a scholar.
He led one of the most successful Islamic revivals in Africa, based on knowledge, justice, and piety
2/ Born in 1754 in Gobir (modern-day northern Nigeria), Uthman dan Fodio was a Fulani scholar of the Maliki school and Qadiri Sufi order.
From a young age, he mastered the Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh, Arabic, and spiritual purification (tazkiyah).
His heart belonged to Allah, not dunya. 🕊️
3/ He traveled across Hausaland preaching tawheed, calling people away from innovation and corrupt leadership.
He taught that Islam is not just belief, it’s justice, learning, humility, and governance by the Qur’an and Sunnah.
His da’wah wasn’t fiery. It was wise, calm, and rooted in ilm.
4/ Corrupt kings and elites grew uncomfortable.
They banned him from preaching.
They oppressed the poor.
So when the scholars, the masses, and even some kings asked him to lead, he accepted.
But this wasn’t about power. It was about reviving the deen
The jihad began.
5/ In 1804, he declared jihad against the tyrannical rulers of Gobir, launching the Sokoto Jihad.
It wasn’t about land or ego. It was about removing oppression, ignorance, and falsehood.
He never fought for personal gain.
And he laid strict rules for ethical warfare.
6/ Within a few years, his movement toppled corrupt kingdoms and united a vast territory under Islamic rule … the Sokoto Caliphate.
It became one of the largest and most well-organized Islamic empires in 19th-century Africa, governed by sharia, scholarship, and justice. 🌍
7/ He didn’t hoard power.
He handed leadership to his son Muhammad Bello and his brother Abdullahi dan Fodio
Then he retired into seclusion, devoting his life to writing, worship, and teaching.
A true zahid — ascetic in power, rich in taqwa.
8/ 📚 His Works:
Uthman dan Fodio authored over 100 books in Arabic, Fula and Hausa.
Here are a few of his most powerful:
-Bayan Wujub al-Hijra — Justification for migration and jihad
-Nuru al-Albab — On leadership and moral governance
-Siraj al-Ikhwan — Guidance for Islamic communities
-Diya’ al-Sultan — Duties of Muslim rulers
-Tanbih al-Ikhwan — Reform and purification of the soul
9/ He emphasized the rights of women in Islamic education.
His daughter Nana Asma’u was a scholar, poet, and educator who trained women teachers known as yan-taru
This was over 200 years ago, long before modern “empowerment” movements 💫📖
10/ Despite leading a caliphate, Uthman dan Fodio lived simply
He prayed tahajjud regularly
He fasted often
He wept in sujood
He avoided praise
He constantly reminded people of the Day of Judgment
He feared Allah more than any army.
11/ His legacy?
-The Sokoto Caliphate lasted 100+ years
-Knowledge flourished across West Africa
- Women had access to Islamic learning
-His family continued producing scholars and leaders
- His writings are still studied today
He changed the course of African Islamic history
12/ He once said:
“A believer is never satisfied with learning until he reaches Jannah.”
That was his life teaching, worshipping, leading, serving, and leaving behind a legacy of light 🕊️
May Allah reward Sheikh Uthman dan Fodio with the highest ranks in Jannah. Ameen
13/ Don’t let his name remain hidden.
Read his works

After reading comments under a tweet on about how a Muslim woman isn’t allowed to marry a Christian man & for a Muslim man, isn’t advisable to marry a Christian woman due to possible arising issues. Let me make it clear to to every christian, Jew, pagan, atheists etc out there…
What u think about Islam doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t really have to make sense to you. Y’all don’t even know your religion why talking about others?. You cnt find Muslims doing that. Islamic knowledge isn’t like western education, google cn never make u educated about Islam
And to the Muslims saying things like “You cnt judge me” after going against Quranic sayings, just know that you’re a Kafir. You don’t manipulate Islam to what you want. Nahh you do what Islam ask you to do. And that’s on a period. Your choices doesn’t count. That’s submission.
