Since the Canadian government is under fire for lies and deception over the Minister of Foreign Affairs telling Canadians we aren't sending weapons or weapons parts to Israel to commit genocide in Gaza, when in fact, this has been happening up until last month. I have a story.
This is about the Canadian government, through its political arm, exerting pressure on non-governmental organizations and the civil service to silence the truth about the Gaza genocide. The same genocide that's being committed by Israel, funded, armed, and supported by Canada.
In July 2024, I started formal conversations with the Public Health Agency of Canada through the Racialized Employee Network to deliver a presentation about "Gaza and Sudan: a discussion on the local and international public health impacts of structural racism in global crises".
It took months to organize and prepare, and it was scheduled for December 5, 2024 at 11:00am virtually. In advance of the session, I send in my slide deck, and the title of my talk "Genocide in Gaza" was changed to "Impacts of Structural Racism on Gaza’s Healthcare system". Image
My presentation slidedeck was reviewed and "genocide" was removed, and as was my entire slide about how the Canadian public service could do to help, including supporting the BDS movement and Arms Embargo Now campaign. Image
My presentation was watered down into a purely 'humanitarian' lens, devoid of historical and political context for why and how Gaza is experiencing genocide at the hands of Israel, supported by Canada. This has always been preventable. Image
I wasn't sure about continuing to do such a presentation that would lack the rigour of political analysis necessary to understand the root causes of disease and suffering in Palestine - I have studied settler colonialism and its impacts on Palestinian health.
But I said yes, sure, I will concede to the censorship with the aim of reaching a wider audience to talk about "Gaza and Sudan: a discussion on the local and international public health impacts of structural racism in global crises" - we also had an excellent speaker from Sudan.
However, literal minutes before the event was supposed to take place. It was cancelled. Why? Because members of the Jewish Employee Network reached out to Ya'ara Saks (Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health), who then exerted pressure on the President and VP of the Public Health Agency of Canada to cancel the event.
In the days leading up to the event, there were complaints sent in, citing how the entire federal public service was invited to the event. Image
There were strong opposing views for my specific presence at the event. Citing a physician in the community who previously doxxed me and got me suspended from @uOttawaMed, but then they welcomed me back after their own investigation - I chose not to return. Image
Image
There were views in support of my presence and views as well, including from members of the Jewish Employee Network. Image
The organizers of the event and the other speakers were shocked. A Minister was involved. Ya'ara Saks, who was the then Minister of Mental Health and Addictions
Associate Minister of Health. She put pressure on the President and VP of the Public Health Agency to silence the truth about Gaza. While people who organized against the event were gleefully celebrating in their government-issued group chat.Image
I was less shocked. Why? Because Ya'ara Saks had previously intervened and attempted to stop another event I was invited to - a film screening event for World Mental Health Day on the film 'Gaza Ghetto: Portrait of a Palestinian Family'. And I didn't need an Access to Information request to acquire the receipts, because they openly posted about their strategy on social media.Image

Image
Not only was Ya'ara Saks involved in cancelling this other event on Palestinian mental health, but they also explained how their strategy included another Member of Parliament, Marco Mendicino, and even included contacting other provincial MPPs and Premier Ford. Image

Why do I share all this? The Canadian government's complicity and active involvement in Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza, is not limited to military exports to Israel. These are two clear examples of anti-Palestinian racism by the previous Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health to ensure that the truth about genocide in Gaza would not be told to the entire federal public service.
Genocide in Gaza is only able to continue because of the support enjoyed by Israel from Western countries like Canada. This support comes in many forms, including the repression and the silencing of healthcare workers who are volunteering their time to speak truth to power.

I want to share with you some harrowing testimony from current Palestinian @MSF Staff in light of MSF's decision to share staff lists and information with Israel. (@DecoloniseMsf)
"I am against sharing any lists, names, or information related to employees because of the rogue entity's barbarity and its illicit use of this data, and sharing such information puts individuals at risk." - Current Palestinian MSF Staff
"Sharing names means not only targeting employees but also filtering who can continue working and who cannot. This is in the hands of the occupying authorities, meaning we don't know how they classify people. Furthermore, employees become targets not only of their livelihoods but also of their lives.

Knowing that the occupying authorities won't stop there, the matter will escalate to targeting patients and their families, as well as the families of employees. The occupation's classifications of those it considers collaborators or not are based on no logic or right and wrong. This is all part of a genocidal plan that, although seemingly halted, has been ongoing for over 70 years and will continue." - Current Palestinian MSF Staff

I want to give you some more context as to the “cancellation” of the capital pride parade today in Ottawa. I won’t link the media coverage by mainstream media, but you can look for it, but don’t believe everything you are reading. Especially from the mayor and capital pride.
The mayor and capital pride as an organization (corporate pride) have framed the “cancellation” because of the protestors/activists who stand in unwavering solidarity with Palestine. Because they had the audacity to care about the ongoing Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
The group at the head of the capital pride parade was Queers for Palestine who were invited by Miss Patience, the grand marshal of the parade, to lead the march together. The march was halted to demand and negotiate for very decent and reasonable things. Image

When the overt genocide intensified in October 2023 (because the Zionist settler colonial project has always been genocidal from its initiation in 1948) with Israeli attacks on hospitals in Gaza, I was not only on the board for the Canadian Medical Association, but also for public health organizations. So let me tell you about them.
Unlike my time with the Canadian Medical Association, where I resigned because the board leadership wanted me to shut up about Gaza and stop calling it a "genocide", because I made a few people on the board so unsafe to attend a virtual Zoom meeting with me also there. I stuck with the public health organizations for a bit to see how things would play out.
I was on the board of directors for the Canadian Public Health Association, and I was also one of the two resident representatives for the Public Health Physicians of Canada organization. The first represents public health interests nationally, and the latter represents public health and preventive medicine as a medical specialty nationally.

Updates coming through via @GazaFFlotilla now.

1️⃣ Adalah Update | 27 July 2025, 20 PM Jerusalem time

Adalah’s lawyers have met with 17 of the 21 detained activists, either at Ashdod Port or in an Israeli police station. According to the lawyers, all are in relatively stable condition.

Israel is handling the custody of the volunteers as though they had entered the country illegally—even though they were forcibly taken from international waters and brought into Israel against their will. The authorities presented them with two options: either agree to so-called “voluntary deportation,” or remain in detention and appear before a tribunal, to have their continued detention pending deportation reviewed.
2️⃣ For a full explanation of the legal process and Adalah’s legal position, see our detailed Q&A:

The following activists have agreed to deportation and are expected to be deported from Israel in the coming hours: Antonio Mazzeo (Italy), Gabrielle Cathala (France), Jacob Berger (United States).adalah.org/uploads/upload…
3️⃣ The following activists refused to sign voluntary deportation orders; they remain in Israeli custody and will be brought before an Israeli tribunal to review the legality of their continued detention pending deportation: Braedon Peluso (United States), Robert Martin (Australia), Tania (Tan) Safi (“Australia”), Justine Kempf (France), Emma Fourreau (France – Sweden), Antonio La Picirella (Italy), Christian Smalls (United States), Chloé Fiona Ludden (United Kingdom – France), Sergio Toribio Sanchez (Spain), Vigdis Bjorvand (Norway), Hatem Aouini (Tunisia) and Santiago González Vallejo (Spain).

Here is the text of the remarks I shared last night at an organizing call with @vote_palestine. Let us all do what we can to end this horrific and monstrous reality of Canadian complicity in Israel's genocide of Palestinians. End the occupation. Free the people of Palestine.
Thank you to the organizers for this important campaign, and for all of you attending this virtual rally in taking the time to participate and to do what you can to help end Canada’s complicity in this ongoing genocide in Gaza. The genocide in Gaza is taking place on the backdrop of an existing 18 year Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip, and 77 years of the ongoing Nakba - a process and structure of Zionist settler colonialism, funded and supported by the colonial and imperial West, including Canada.
I was in Gaza a year ago working in multiple primary care clinics, and what I witnessed with my own eyes was forced starvation of an entire population amounting to genocide. I took care of patients who were on the brink of death from severe malnutrition and dehydration. Days after I left Gaza, we learned of official confirmation of deaths of multiple children from severe malnutrition. The clinics that I worked at no longer exist because of the Rafah invasion by the Israeli military which intensified in May of last year. I visited the European Gaza hospital in Khan Younis, and saw multiple cases of young children between the ages of 6-10 years old who had sniper gunshot injuries to the head and chest inflicted by the Israeli military, and a young child with full body burns because of an Israeli airstrike. This was a year ago.

As universities and medical schools have remained painfully silent in the face of Israel’s systematic and deliberate attacks on healthcare in Gaza, and ongoing efforts to silence and suppress speech in support of Palestinian human rights through acts of anti-Palestinian racism, here is an example at @DalhousieU of how to organize within institutions to protect academic speech and advance dialogue on Palestine.Image
Image
Dr. Osama Loubani is a critical care physician and assistant dean at the medical school at Dalhousie university. He recently sent this letter to medical students who had reached out months ago expressing fear and worry about how to talk about Palestinian human rights.
The use of anti-Palestinian racism within universities and medical schools to silence and suppress anyone who dares humanizes Palestinians and their narratives has been disgustingly effective. It has led to suspensions, reprimands, and intimidation tactics that have sowed fear.
