MAHA just announced that states will be able to prohibit people from purchasing junk food with SNAP.

They claim this will make people healthier. That it’ll force them to make better choices.

It won’t.

Why? They aren’t addressing the privilege involved with healthy eating 🧵
I’m all for a healthy diet.

I only consume whole and unprocessed foods myself, and even did a year as a raw vegan to try and reduce my overall inflammation.

It was an eye opening experience that I was only able to do because of my privilege.
In a perfect world, we would all be eating the healthiest and most nutrient dense food available.

But we don’t live in a perfect world.

Whole foods are more expensive, take longer to prepare and require more effort than “junk food”
People who are disabled, elderly, living in poverty and/or food deserts sometimes have no other choice.

Fed is better than dead.

This latest restriction will result in people going hungry.

Kids starving because their parents can’t make them a healthy meal.
You can’t cut off an entire category of food without addressing the various systemic barriers to healthy eating.

There needs to be a plan to lower the cost of fresh whole foods.

They need to be made more available, cheaper and in easy to prepare options.
People need a basic living wage to ensure they have the time to shop, prep and cook.

If you’re working two full time jobs just to survive; you can’t possibly be cooking from scratch every day.
Even if all those goals were accomplished, there are still people who rely on junk food for survival.

There are still people who may want it as an occasional treat.

Banning it altogether sends a message that poor & disabled people don’t “deserve” treats.
This isn’t about making people healthier.

It’s about blaming them for their illnesses.

If we blame diet and lifestyle, we can feel better about not treating people when they get sick.

It’s eugenics and it’s on full display.
There are so many better ways to encourage people to eat healthier.

We should have universal healthcare, a basic income, childcare and affordable housing.

If basic needs are met, healthy living becomes much easier.
Finally, disability is no one’s fault.

Healthy living can help, but you can’t wellness your way out of chronic illness.

It doesn’t work that way, and the only reason to convince people otherwise is a desire to label disabled people expendable.

We are not expendable /end
There’s a depressing number of people in the comments who seem to want to prove my point.

This isn’t about making people healthier, it’s about punishing the poor & the sick.

People are gloating that their choices will be restricted.

No one is fighting for better food options.

The forced birth crowd love to spin a narrative that women are “heroes” for going through with a pregnancy that risks their lives.

They’re conditioning us to accept high maternal mortality rates due to abortion bans.

The woman below isn’t “cancer free”, she’s dead. Screenshot of life news.com Headline reads Pregnant Mom Diagnosed With Cancer Rejects Abortion, After Birth Now She's Cancer-Free Photo of a woman In a white dress holding a baby. Text reads Detroit, Michigan pro-life advocate refused to give up hope when she found out she had terminal breast cancer while pregnant with her youngest son.
We saw the same thing with Adriana Smith.

A Georgia hospital turned her body into an incubator for a 9 week old fetus, and they did it without her family’s consent

Many pro-life people said it’s what “all mothers would want” and it was a worthy sacrifice for her baby’s survival
That hospital did a grotesque experiment on a deceased black woman and they spun it into a triumph.

The woman in the story above needed cancer treatment. Her doctors recommended abortion. She declined, and the cancer killed her.

That’s not a triumph. It’s a tragedy.

Rodney Taylor, is a disabled man who was detained by ICE back in January & thrown in a Georgia detention facility.

He’s still there.

A double amputee, Taylor was taken into custody just two days before he was schedule to receive new prosthetic legs. 🧵
What’s followed is a series of abuse and mistreatment, including being unable to charge his legs, unable to use the wheelchair because of injuries to his hand and denial of access to his new legs.
Now the Georgia detention centre has put him in solitary confinement. Why?

Because his cell flooded with water and he refused to enter as it would damage his prosthetics.

He spent 3 days in “restrictive housing” without access to water.

The cruelty is the point

At 19 I was told my health came second to my future husband.

At 22 I was told I would feel differently once I was “in love”

At 24 my boyfriend was asked if he would still love me if I couldn’t bear children.

My autonomy was violated for 5 years for a hypothetical baby 🧵
I had severe endometriosis and adenomyosis.

My periods were absolutely hell.

They were irregular, heavy and excruciatingly painful.

I would lay on the bathroom floor in unrelenting pain, throwing up and too weak to move.
As the years dragged on I became progressively more disabled from the pain and severe anemia.

Surgeries to control the blood loss failed.

Medications to put me into chemical menopause failed.

Birth control pills failed.

I needed a hysterectomy.

Many Americans aren’t familiar with Canadian serial killer & rapist Paul Bernardo, nicknamed the “schoolgirl killer”

He & wife Karla Homolka raped and killed women together before being arrested in 1993.

The prosecution made a deal with Homolka, the “deal with the devil” 🧵
He was charged and tried for the rapes and murders of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy, though there were many more victims, including his wife’s own sister Tammy Homolka.

The prosecution made a deal with Karla to testify against him, giving her a reduced sentence.
At the time she claimed she was also a victim and had been forced to participate in the crimes.

After the deal was done, video evidence surfaced which clearly showed she was a far more active participant than she had led police & prosecutors to believe.

A few weeks ago I wrote about a South Carolina woman who had been arrested for a miscarriage.

I was lambasted with comments about how it was a stillbirth, how she was a horrible mother etc.

Today we found out it was an 18 week loss & she DID go to the hospital for care🧵
First things first, she was originally charged with “desecration of a corpse”

So before anyone tries to come in here with a “gotcha”…
I’m well aware of this fact.

The forced birth brigade seems to be using that charge because they can’t charge someone for a miscarriage
If there was no abortion ban, she could have received proper medical care.

If there was no abortion ban, the hospital would have comforted her instead of calling child protective services.

The abortion ban is the problem and it’s why I say they’re criminalizing pregnancy

Today I was told that if I can’t cook simple meals for myself I should be institutionalized

That people on disability should not be allowed to access “luxuries” like food delivery services because they’re unhealthy & expensive

This is eugenics.

Feeding oneself is survival 🧵
People act like their tax dollars shouldn’t support disabled people and that if they do, it must be the most bare bones life imaginable

They want us to suffer

They want us in legislated poverty.

Why? Ableism. They want us to die faster because they see us as “useless eaters”
Delivery services are a lifeline for disabled people

We don’t get extra money from the tax payer when we use them…we have to budget & usually that means going without another necessity

Until you’ve had to choose between food and meds or food and housing, perhaps don’t weigh in
