A thread on oil, geopolitics, & blatant double standards 🧵
In 2022, the world was on the brink of an oil shock.
Russia... the 2nd largest crude producer — pumps ~9.5M barrels/day, about 11% of global supply.
When Europe scaled down Russian imports after the Ukraine war, panic hit the markets.
⚠️ Prices soared to $137/barrel.
The West had 2 choices:
👉 Ban Russian oil completely → prices explode
👉 Price cap → keep supply flowing
The G7 instead introduced a price cap.. $60/barrel.
Any country could buy Russian crude legally as long as it was below that price.
Before the war, Russian crude was negligible for India... just 0.2% of imports.
👉 Today? 36% of our oil comes from Russia.
Why? Because it was:
— Legal under G7 rules
— At steep discounts
— Vital for stabilizing global prices
📌 Even the US publicly supported India’s move.
In 2022, US Treasury Sec. Janet Yellen said:
"We’re happy for India to buy as much Russian oil as it wants… even above the cap, if avoiding Western services."
📌 Fast forward to 2024.
👉 A top US State Dept official admitted:
"India has played a key role in stabilizing global energy markets through its purchases of Russian crude."
👉 And former US Ambassador Eric Garcetti said:
"We wanted someone to buy Russian oil at the cap. India fulfilled that."
📌 So why is Trump now portraying India as "funding the war"?
If he’s serious, he could sanction Russian oil.
But here’s why he won’t:
1️⃣ It would hurt allies still buying Russian pipeline crude.
2️⃣ Prices could jump to $200/barrel, triggering global inflation.
3️⃣ UN sanctions? Impossible... Russia would veto.
India has always respected global sanctions.
🇮🇷 In 2007, Iran supplied 12% of our crude. After sanctions, India stopped buying.
Meanwhile…
🇨🇳 China still buys 1.4M barrels/day from Iran despite sanctions.
If India stopped buying Russian oil today:
➡️ We’d compete in crowded West Asian markets → prices rise
➡️ Russia would sell more to China at bigger discounts → strategic loss for India
Result?
Global prices up, China wins.
India’s role isn’t just about getting cheap oil.
👉 We’re balancing the global oil market for 1.44B citizens... and for the world.
Yet instead of thanks, we get tariff threats.
Facts matter. Hypocrisy shouldn’t.
👉 India’s Russian oil purchases:
— Stabilized prices
— Prevented global inflation spike
— Followed all legal frameworks
The West designed this system. India kept it running. That’s the truth.
If Trump wants to stop Russian oil, he knows what to do... but it will hurt his own allies & voters.
Until then, the facts stand:
India isn’t funding a war.
👉 India is keeping the world’s energy market alive.
What should be the India's NEXT MOVE ?

Thailand, backed by the US, has launched aggressive military strikes on China-supported Cambodia over a historic Shiv Mandir.
Here’s the explosive truth behind this conflict! 🧵
The Preah Vihear Temple is a 1,000-year-old Shiv Mandir that lies at the center of a long-standing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.
This ancient temple, deeply connected to India’s heritage, is more than just a religious site... it’s a powerful symbol of national pride and geopolitical power.
Thailand, with a population of 72M and a $570B GDP, dwarfs Cambodia’s 17M people and $33B economy.
Thailand’s military, armed with a $6B defense budget and US-supplied F-16 jets, is hammering Cambodia, whose $600M defense budget is no match.
