OK, here's the Space I have scheduled for tomorrow at 10 am Central time.
Pay attention to my "ground rules" or my "guidance" I am going to post as reply to this post. I think it may well veer wildly off topic if I don't do this. x.com/i/spaces/1LyxB…
Biblical Apocalypse has become associated with a lot of rather clueless theology concerning what Apocalypse actually is, or how it was intended to be used by the Biblical authors who employed it. It has ZERO to do with giving a "crystal ball" into events in the 20th-21st... 1/
...Centuries. Biblical authors employed the Apocalyptic genre in order to illuminate ("ie "unveil") what was behind what was happening for their audience, in THEIR contemporary setting. The "Left Behind" stuff is NONSENSE. "Apocalypse" literally means "to unveil". 2/
Given that, we are in dire need ("we" being the Christian community, worldwide) of a continued and current "unveiling" for our Ecological Crisis today. It is of the urgency and scope to REQUIRE a more specific "revelation" that more specifically identifies the..... 3/
Ecological threat as the existential threat that it is. Traditional Biblical authors, from our "existing canons" of Scripture, were NOT aware of a looming ecological crisis (since there were none of any semblance to what we have now, or could even be conceived by them). 4/
So I am going to employ a couple of Bill McKibben books as examples of what might be considered as a contemporary example of a relevant, currently helpful and instructive "Apocalyptic". 5/
I believe this is helpful because of the definition or concept of what is properly "Apocalyptic" in the sense that I define it with my particular "ecotheology" lens. Two attributes of Apocalyptic stand out for me: 6/
1: The literal meaning of the word "Apocalypse" is "to unveil". So the first purpose or stage of Apocalyptic verse is to identify what is behind a set of realities that are being presented or described. To identify the reason for it (usually infidelity or unfaithfulness of ...7/
...humankind. The new Apocalyptic will be a bit less "cryptic" and identify the evil of ecological damage, and the moral decay that motivates it. 8/
By the way, the only reason I see for why current "canonical" Apocalypse in the Bible is "cryptic" is precisely because we are reading it from the 21st century, and it's "contemporary" readers were much more cognizant of what was being referenced. 9/
2: The apocalyptic presentation proceeds to the envisioning of "what should be" or "what was meant to be". In other words, "The Kingdom of God" that is all about peace, health, love, plenty, and interdependence. The "City of God". "Streets of Gold" is an ancient vision...10/
(Despite how a certain one known widely as the "Orange One" apparently has a fetish for GOLD and such nonsense) 11/
So the "New Heaven and a New Earth" is the crowning finale of what is likely the most well known of the "Biblical Apocalypse" genre ("The Book of the Revelation to John", not "Revelations" as many use in reference to it) 12/
The contemporary ENVISIONING is the envisioning of "An Ecological Civilization" (a term I got from a John Cobb sponsored conference I attended in 2015). It is of the ilk of what theologian Walter Bruegemann called "Prophetic Imagination" 13/
So this is not a vision of "The End" as in the "where everybody dies" kind of "end", but rather, an "end" as in the goal, as in "means to a particular end" . As an Ecotheologian, the "end times" is now the task set before humanity to embody a "City on a Hill" that ....14/
...provides an incarnate example of what Climate justice (which I believe is synonymous with "God's justice" or "Creation justice"). It is the purpose of humanity now to work together to figure out what this looks like and then GET TO IT without delay. 15/
To "delay" on this is what @AlexSteffen refers to as "Predatory Delay", since the delay is instigated & backed by those who would PREY upon life on the earth for their own perceived profit. And I say "perceived" profit, because they will prove to be SO WRONG about "profit". /16
So there you have it. This is where we will begin. I will open with this when the space is "called to order" to focus on this and what it might look like incarnated in our world today, wherever we are. 17/

Re: the need for a new/updated "Revelation" or "Apocalyptic" narrative that is "inspired" or motivated by the new ecological reality. It begins with the idea that the reason I'm suggesting this "re-opening of the canon" in order to "add some needed updates" (or "amendments")...1/
...that start with the present reality, and how we've gotten here. The "unveil" here is the "vision" of what we've done. So the "common ground" relatable stuff is going to be primarily the job of the preacher or teacher, for the specifics. 2/
The "new apocalyptic" I am talking about is that announcement of the new reality. The entire Bible is a series of announcements, followed by stories of people reacting and attempting to express their lives as people in that reality. 3/
I just saw another list of problems of our present realities in America, and , once again, there is no mention of the Ecological hell we're continuing to build for ourselves and our children.
I posted this in reply:
1/
Worst of all, nobody's talking about the Ecological Crisis, despite our essentially having run out of time to do an achievable transition. The earlier we had begun this, the more affordable and less stressful of a change it would have been. Now we are pushing ...2/
...that time of transition further out (and looking more and more like it will never happen. "Predatory delay" is what Alex Steffen calls this, and it's becoming more "Predatory" by the day as our window of best opportunity slips further and further into implausibility. 3/
I just read a series of tweets expressing disgust at the U.S. bombing Iran while a laundry list of woes in America , all exacerbated by the outright insane assault of MAGA/GOP/Trump, but once again, like so many "Progressive" critiques, fail to ...1/
...even so much as mention the Ecological Crisis, as if it hasn't been bearing down on us for the last 30-40 years, and ever so much more apparent and accelerating in the past 5 years. This kind of continued neglect in our national consciousness is going to be ...2/
... every bit as deadly, and THEN SOME. God help us.
I started to reply with something like the above, then decided to screen shot** it so I'm not "pushing back" on someone who is merely upset (as I am) about what's happening now with the insanity ... 3/
This "Opinion" is absolutely oblivious to reality. If you look at this writer's other works, it's typical of the media now. A few things about this (a long thread) : 1/
"Guess who Americans want to run the economy? Hint: It's not Democrats. | Opinion usatoday.com/story/opinion/…
"Donald Trump's focus on the economy is why Americans elected him president."
This is an astounding thing to say; even more so that it is something that is taken seriously by anyone. Really? TRUMP's FOCUS? First of all, what is "FOCUS" with this guy? 2/
Is that even a relevant word with this completely off the rails INABILITY to stay on ANY topic at all? And EVERY TIME he's asked about ANYTHING, he derails into "sharks and electrocution" and "eating dogs and cats" and "AI robot Biden clones". Seriously? 3/
Another quote from my Wendell Berry reading that I just have to relay to you:
"Despite its protests to the contrary, modern Christianity has become willy-nilly the religion of the state and the economic status quo. Because it has been so exclusively dedicated to ... 1/
...incanting anemic souls into Heaven, it has been made the tool of much earthly villainy. It has, for the most part, stood silently by while a predatory economy has ravaged the world, destroyed its natural beauty and health, divided and plundered its human communities and ...2/
... households. It has flown the flag and chanted the slogans of empire. It has assumed with the economists that "economic forces" automatically work for good and has assumed with the industrialists and militarists that technology determines history. 3/
A Facebook post (see ) from a person I follow asks this question:
"THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY desperately needs a new leader to emerge, a combination of MLK jr., Angela Merkel, Fred Rogers and Fareed Zakaria. Not asking for much. Who’s in your combo?"buff.ly/I30Y71s
So I made my contribution:
An Ecological preacher/teacher is needed here, too. MLK was likely to have become one had he lived longer (but had already been calling more attention to the ecological trends than most of his contemporaries). 2/
But even he was "Pre-Crisis" in terms of a public awareness that was , henceforth, undeniable and inescapable after James Hansen made sure he told everyone in a Congressional hearing what our government had been neglecting to tell us about the coming Climate Crisis. 3/
