I wrote a piece for the Guardian about the real reason the UK houses asylum seekers in hotels. Since this website is now dominated by racists and fascists, I thought it would be helpful to post the key points below, for anyone who wants to know the truth.
The UK is wealthy enough to offer sanctuary to refugees - and should do. We don't receive an unusual number of asylum applications compared to our European neighbours. But three key political decisions have led to our unusual reliance on hotels.
One: Tony Blair's government decided to make people seeking asylum heavily reliant on state support.
Two: David Cameron and Nick Clegg's coalition government privatised asylum accommodation.
Three: the government of Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak deliberately sabotaged the asylum system.
If that sounds like a familiar story, it's because it's the recent story of the British state all over. And it won't get better by tearing down a convenient scapegoat. Politicians and campaigners who ignore this are trying to take us all for mugs.
