Huddle video 🧵 of post Edinburgh International Book Festival book launch with Nicola Sturgeon’s and Scottish press
First questions on Joanna Cherry’s description of her leadership as “Stalinist” and snp finances, then on whether she owes women vilified in gender row an apology👇🏻
Questions on pandemic WhatsApp deletions/if she made trans people’s lives worse/was she a bully or bullied by Alex Salmond? Should she have revealed her convos with the Queen about him?
Asked about impact of her book on Moira Salmond
I asked her about her comments at the festival event re not tarring a group of people because of a minority of abusive ones
On the Supreme Court and Kate Forbes Summerhall cancellation
On defacto referendums and John Swinney’s strategy and why there’s so little about the drugs death crisis in her book
Finally she’s asked about ferries and the online abuse/threats she has received

NEW: Boris Johnson oversaw a ‘toxic and chaotic culture’ in government during the Covid pandemic, which prevented good decision making, the UK Covid inquiry has concluded.
More on @LBCNews
The report says Johnson ‘reinforced a culture in which the loudest voices prevailed and the views of other colleagues, particularly women, often went ignored’, and claims he ‘encouraged’ the ‘destabilising behaviour’ of Dominic Cummings.
In Scotland, the inquiry concluded that Nicola Sturgeon as First Minister acted in a way that often excluded others in her own government from deciding key policies.
MSPs passed the Land Reform Bill tonight (after three days of debate on amendments). Scottish Govt describes it as radical, land reform campaigner and author Andy Wightman tells @LBC it doesn't go far enough, and is "timid"
1/
He says the tenancy and management plan parts of the Bill are good but "the central problem is the two measures supposed to tackle pattern of concentrated land ownership won't do anything of the sort - they're complex and bureaucractic and won't have the impact expected
to that extent I've argued we possibly shouldn't even have passed them... they should lead to significant and justifiable outcomes and IMO they don't"
He adds "tax, transparency, land information the market, these are fundamental things not being tackled in this Bill"
Marion Calder of @ForWomenScot told @LBC “It was only 10 days ago that Scottish Government lodged paperwork with the Court of Session, claiming the school guidance was entirely lawful. So it's a significant turnaround to now amend sections that form the grounds of the court 1/3
action. We welcome improvements & are glad to see recognition that toilets and changing rooms provision is on the basis of sex. We will need to consider it with our legal team as to where this leaves our case.
2/3
“It's not obvious why it took so long to make changes reflecting the Supreme Court's decision. We'll need time to work through the whole paperwork in detail, to make sure the Scottish Government has fully accepted the implications of the UK Supreme Court.”
BREAKING: More legal proceedings against NHS Fife by Sandie Peggie have been lodged - this time inc named employees.
Her solicitor Margaret Gribbon said: "I can confirm that on 6th August 2025 my client, Sandie Peggie, raised further legal proceedings in the employment tribunal
against Fife Health Board (FHB), Dr Kate Searle, Dr Maggie Currer and Esther Davidson. All four Respondents’ legal defences to the claim are expected to be received within the next fortnight.
"The claim arises from these senior managers’ opposition to the decision
by another FHB manager in March 2024 to lift Sandie’s suspension. Sandie only became aware of this matter when the suspension review manager gave evidence at her tribunal hearing in July.
"The claim is one of alleged harassment and victimisation under the Equality Act 2010
NEW: Susan Smith of @ForWomenScot has told @LBC @LBCNews that it’s “fear of activists” in SNP which has prevented the Scottish Govt implementing the Supreme Court ruling which has led FWS to launch new legal action. She says John Swinney “risks making this an election issue”
1/5
“If we do end up going to court that will be close to the 2026 election and I cannot understand why John Swinney would want to preside over another humiliating legal defeat” she says
2/5
“I think he’ll be wishing he had met with us” she says - the FM had said he would but then later told @LBC he had “a lot on his plate”. Smith says “ I don’t know if the govt thinks we’ll get bored and go away but we won’t”

🧵 NEW: Prime Minister Keir Starmer has responded to Nigel Farage’s comments saying he’d scrap the Barnett formula for Scotland, telling @LBC “What would come in its place is total economic chaos.
“He thinks you can find a magic wand and find tens of billions of pounds without
paying for it. We tried that with Liz Trust. It did huge damage to Scotland. It will be exactly the same under Nigel Farage. He's very good at fantasy. I'm grounded in making sure we deliver for the people of Scotland".
Asked why he won’t be going to Hamilton where there’s a crucial by-election on Thursday he says “my job is to deliver for the whole of Scotland and that’s what I’ve been doing today. Again refers to Reform’s pledges as “fantasy economics” and accuses Nigel Farage as “pro-Putin”
