1/9
Two hot, physical days in Philly as the #Browns and #Eagles went toe to toe in joint practices. Here are my 9 major takeaways from the work in South Philly. 🏈🔥
2/9 Defensive Front Was Dominant
Jim Schwartz’s group won with get off, penetration, and hand usage. The “double mug” look with linebackers walked in A gaps created constant one on ones for the defensive line. Miles Garrett, Mason Graham, Alex Wright, and Isaiah McGuire all had multiple pressures.
3/9 Miles Garrett Was Unblockable
Garrett’s speed and bend off the edge was too much for the Eagles’ left tackles. He also slid inside on stunts TE and TT for interior pressure. Pure disruption and would have had multiple sacks if live.
4/9 Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire Stock Up
Wright’s position flexibility stood out playing five tech and three tech using length against slower guards. McGuire mixed bull rush with speed to bend winning with heavy hands and leverage.
5/9 Mason Graham Already Looks Like a Vet
Elite hand usage with jab step to swipe, shed on screens, and anchor versus doubles. Diagnosed a tight end screen, extended, disengaged, and tackled in space. Impressive for a young defensive tackle.
6/9 Coverage Was Physical and Smart
Corners used late hands to disrupt catches. Denzel Ward’s breakup on DeVonta Smith was textbook. Tony Brown mirrored well and Miles Harden had multiple pass breakups. Tight coverage all over.
7/9 Flacco Steady Gabriel Up and Down
Flacco showed poise, timing, and anticipation. Opposite hash deep comeback to Jerry Jeudy was elite. Gabriel flashed accuracy with a touchdown to Marshall but missed some open throws. Biggest concern over the two days was 8 to 10 drops in practice. Diontae Johnson is also showing he can push Ced Tillman for the #2 WR spot.
8/9 Run Game Identity Still Building
Inside runs like duo and counter had little movement versus Philly defensive tackles. More success in C gap with gap scheme concepts and heavy pre snap motion to create space. Commitment to physicality was clear.
9/9 Iron Sharpens Iron
Both days were hot, physical, and competitive. Browns front seven matched up with one of the NFL’s best offensive lines and the coverage unit held strong against elite receivers. August work that feels like January football. 🏈
