Most don’t know that from Maharshi Kashyap’s wives came entire clans of Devas, Asuras, Nagas, Yakshas, Garudas & more.

1. Kashyap Rishi
One of the Saptarishis, Kashyap married 13 daughters of Daksha Prajapati.
From these unions emerged diverse beings – Devas, Danavas, Nagas, birds, animals & even humans.
2. Aditi – Mother of Adityas (Devas)
From Aditi were born Indra, Surya (Vivasvan), Varuna, Mitra, Vamana (Vishnu Avatar) and other Devas.
3. Diti – Mother of Daityas (Asuras)
Diti gave birth to powerful Asuras like Hiranyakashipu, Hiranyaksha, Marichi & Simhika.
Her lineage clashed with Aditi’s (Devas) in many Puranic stories.
4. Danu – Mother of Danavas
From her came 100+ Danavas, including Vritra, Puloman & Kalakeyas.
(That’s why demons are sometimes called Danavas).
5. Vinata – Mother of Garuda & Aruna
Vinata’s sons:
Garuda – the mighty vehicle of Bhagwan Vishnu.
Aruna – the charioteer of Surya Dev.
6. Kadru – Mother of Nagas
From her came the serpent clans – Vasuki, Takshak, Shesha & countless Nagas.
7. Surasa – Mother of sea snakes & monsters
Her children include mystical beings of the oceans.
8. Krodhavasha – Mother of Rakshasas
From her were born 14,000 Rakshasas & Nagas. 9. Surabhi – Mother of cows & buffaloes
She is also considered the origin of Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow.
10. Tamra – Mother of birds
Her daughters gave rise to owls, crows, vultures, eagles, swans, horses, camels & donkeys. 11. Ila – Mother of trees & shrubs
She is associated with fertility, forests & nature.
12. Muni – Mother of Apsaras
From her came celestial dancers & courtesans of Swarga. 13. Arishta – Mother of Gandharvas
Heavenly musicians & singers were her children.
From just one sage – Kashyap – came the roots of Devas, Asuras, Nagas, Garudas, Rakshasas, Yakshas, Apsaras, Gandharvas, Cows & Birds.
Truly, Kashyap is the Universal Ancestor of countless beings in Sanatan Dharma.
