In 1989, I published a paper that introduced the word “autogynephilia,” which I defined as a male’s paraphilic tendency to be sexually aroused by the thought or image of himself as a woman. I have therefore often been described, especially online, as the inventor of autogynephilia. Of course, I did not “invent” autogynephilia, any more than Richard von Krafft-Ebing invented pedophilia, Alfred Binet invented fetishism, or Joseph Guislain invented necrophilia. I simply named a phenomenon that previous writers had observed but had not named or else had named in a way that I considered improvable.

In this post, I will present a sample of clinical observations that prefigured my concept of autogynephilia. (1/5)
The closest equivalent to my term “autogynephilia” is Magnus Hirschfeld’s 1910 term “transvestism.” I gradually became dissatisfied with the term “transvestism” and especially with the way that this word was defined by psychiatrists after Hirschfeld (e.g., in the DSM). That was because “transvestism” does not merely fail to capture the wide range of erotically arousing cross-gender behaviors and fantasies in which women’s garments per se play a small role or none at all; it actually directs attention away from them. Perhaps worse, it ignores the mental contents of heterosexual men who engage in cross-gender behavior — mental contents that are important in understanding the connection between masturbating in women’s panties at one stage of life and pursuing vaginoplasty at another.

It is important to note that my dissatisfactions about the label “transvestism” were first voiced by Hirschfeld himself. This can be seen in one of the quotes in the attachment. (2/5)Image

The next writer, Havelock Ellis, was clearly concerned with mental contents. He also expresses something like my notion that autogynephilia is essentially misdirected heterosexuality. (3/5) Image

The quote from Otto Fenichel in the next attachment is eerily reminiscent of the autogynephilic aria delivered by Sam Rockwell’s character in the fifth episode of the third season of the hit TV drama White Lotus. In his now-famous monologue, Rockwell’s character “Frank” talks about fantasies of being an Asian girl and being penetrated by his male self. (4/5)Image
In the last attachment, H. Taylor Buckner reports an observation similar to my conception of what happens in autogynephilic transsexualism:

“Any viable theory relating the etiologies of autogynephilia and transsexualism must explain the following well-established observation: Gender dysphoria, in young nonhomosexual males, usually appears along with, or subsequent to, autogynephilia; in later years, however, autogynephilic sexual arousal may diminish or disappear, while the transsexual wish remains or grows even stronger. . . . Many men, after years of marriage, are less excited by their wives than they were initially but continue to be deeply attached to them; in other words, pair-bonding, once established, is not necessarily dependent on the continuation of high levels of sexual attraction. It is therefore feasible that the continuing desire to have a female body, after the disappearance of sexual response to that thought, has some analog in the permanent love-bond that may remain between two people after their initial strong sexual attraction has largely disappeared.” (Blanchard, 1991, p. 248) (5/5)Image

Many people seem to think that heterosexual men are relatively recent arrivals to the ranks of biological males who go into public dressed as women or who present to gender identity clinics with the request for hormonal or surgical feminization. The available evidence indicates that the notion of heterosexual men as Johnny-come-latelies is not accurate. The purpose of this post is to present a few samples of such evidence.

In my opinion, nearly every man of the foregoing type is an autogynephile (AGP), that is, a man who has, or once had, a strong tendency to be sexually aroused by the thought or image of himself as a woman. I will therefore refer to them simply as AGPs, even though the available objective evidence might simply be that they are heterosexual (or non-homosexual). (1/6)
The first publicized attempt at surgical sex reassignment was carried out on a previously married man named Einar Wegener. He was a Danish artist who had been married to another artist named Gerda Wegener. Wegener adopted the name Lili Elbe when he transitioned to the female role. Wegener/Elbe underwent surgery of an uncertain nature around 1930.

Wegener/Elbe was the subject of the 2015 movie, The Danish Girl. I believe that Wegener/Elbe was almost certainly an autogynephile, although this popular movie naturally did not stress that point. (2/6)Image

Typologies of male-to-female transsexualism (or lesser degrees of gender dysphoria) go back to at least 1918. All of the notable typologies include a heterosexual type or a transvestitic type. Thus, it is clear that clinical researchers have, for over a century, recognized a type of male-to-female transsexual that they alternatively designated as “heterosexual” or “transvestitic.” These are the type that I call AGP.

Clinicians’ common knowledge of AGP/hetero/nonhomo trans did not reach the general public. That is probably because the usual conduit for such information, reporters in the popular media, had no appetite to include it in their stories about transsexualism. (3/6)Image

<< Difference Between Old-Time (≈1970–1990) And Contemporary Transsexualism Specialists >>

1 of 4: Old-time clinicians did not adopt patients’ perceptions and viewpoints *as their own*.
2 of 4: Old-time clinicians understood that patients had some incommunicable sensation of “truly” belonging to the opposite sex, and they judged that certain severe, intractable cases would be happier approximating the appearance and social role of the opposite sex.
3 of 4: They did not, however, believe that patients actually *were* the opposite sex in their Platonic essence or in some other regard.

The reason I emphasize postoperative transsexuals’ access to washrooms is because the ability to void outside of private homes is important for participation in normal life, including work. 1/5
Gender-critical folk who do not want male-to-female transsexuals using women’s washrooms could simply argue that the necessity of urinating or defecating while in public is transsexuals’ problem, not women’s problem, and that it is up to transsexuals to cope as best they can. 2/5
That viewpoint, however, is out of tune with modern sensibilities, which prohibit any expression of “That’s your problem, not mine” toward any minority group, even when such a stance might reasonably be justified. 3/5

This is a thread about the recent study by Jabbour et al., Robust evidence for bisexual orientation among men. PNAS, pnas.org/content/early/….
Phallometric testing was invented as a penile lie detector, and it is still used for the clinical diagnosis of pedophilia in sexual offenders against children, especially when diagnosis from the patient’s history alone is uncertain. ImageImage
Many people, including many gay men, have asserted that self-described bisexual men are attempting to deceive themselves or to deceive others. Throughout much of the 20th century, many experienced and sophisticated clinical experts also believed this.

I’m going to stop tweeting about “reasonable compromise” after this thread, because it’s been unproductive. Here are my final thoughts, which pertain to adults only. 1/5
Compromise for women: I think that male-to-female (MTF) trans should be allowed in women’s rest rooms after vaginoplasty. 2/5
Compromise for trans: There is no basic need (comparable to urination) to swim in a public pool or exercise in a public gymnasium, and MTF trans should stay out of women’s locker rooms and showers, even if they’ve undergone vaginoplasty. 3/5
