History/Opinion๐Ÿงต: Werewolves vs Partisans

I believe it's a true testament to how pervasive the historical revisionism of Wehrmacht generals is when one looks at how the "Werewolves" have an almost mythical status, versus how Resistance fighters are generally portrayed. (1/15) Image
Image
The first time I heard about the Werewolves they were described as SS diehards who refused to surrender once Germany fell. Stories of how a few killed entire Allied patrols with nothing but daggers. A romanticization of Ubersoldaten that Goebbels would have been proud of. (2/15) Image
Meanwhile, think of the typical WWII Partisan. What do you see? Chances are, it's a peasant (or teen girl, thanks, Hollywood) with an old rifle, scared, barely knows how to shoot, any success they had was owed to "the will of the people", sheer numbers, subterfuge or luck (3/15) Image
The truth is, while yes, there were a lot of poorly trained Resistance fighers, especially early on, all Resistance movements were very well coordinated.
French Resistance fighters, for instance, were covertly trained by SOE and OSS, the best Allied commandos. (4/15) Image
Very interestingly, the Chasseurs Alpins, French elite mountaineers, who managed to escape capture, trained partisans near the Alps, who became elite mountain fighters themselves, able to hold their own against even far better supplied German Gebirgsjรคger. (5/15) Image
The Yugo Partisans, arguably the most successful WWII Resistance, were trained by Yugoslav army remnants and runaway Republican Spain veterans. Soviet partisans were trained by elite NKVD squads who stayed behind as both trainers and commanders of the fledgling resistance. (6/15) Image
Meanwhile, let's take a look at Werewolf training: The idea of having their own partisans was floated around SS High Command in 1943. As the noose was closing, and they saw first hand how effective clandestine militia units could be, it was a sound preparation. (7/15)
However, with typical Nazi arrogance, they did not believe that a prolonged Allied occupation of Germany was possible. Thus, the Werewolves were not conceived as operating as traditional partisans. They were meant to slow down the enemy advance and eliminate collaborators (8/15)
The problem is, training began in late 1944, when the knife was already to the heart. Volunteers were few and far between, and when most heard they were to fight the Red Army hordes while behind enemy lines went "Yeah, no thanks" and ran away or refused to train (9/15) Image
This led to training being extremely disorganized. While some Werewolves received decent training, most received as little as a week of actual training, due to lack of time and resources.

In other words, the average Werewolf made the Volkssturm look like an elite squad. (10/15) Image
And the way Werewolves were initially used were not like typical partisans. They weren't meant to spy, sabotage and only directly attack occupation forces when supported by proper armies. Oh no, the Ubermensch were above such cowardly tactics... (11/15)
Their MO was to hide, wait for the enemy to overwhelm friendly forces, then attack the rear, in order to cause panic, while the Wehrmacht on the other side counterattacked. This did not work for obvious reasons, and led to most Werewolves dying in the Battle of Berlin (12/15)
So, post-war, you had a few scattered Werewolf remnants, whom mostly buried their guns and returned to civilian life. What few diehards remained were unsupported by any nation for obvious reasons, were demoralized, and had no clear goals. (13/15) Image
A handful of successful, yet overall unimportant confirmed Werewolf assassinations and sabotage ops aside, the glorious Nazi diehards who terrified Allied occupation forces is nothing but another piece of propaganda from the tongue of a dying monster. (14/15)
In conclusion, it is perhaps fitting that the end of the Nazis was not their envisioned roaring Werewolf that fought to the glorious end, but yet more poorly trained civilians sent to the slaughter. Yet like with anything else, there are apologists of evil who say otherwise (END) Image

So, the BookTok community has found John's post and are currently putting him on blast, mostly accusing him of mysoginy and only disliking Romantasy because they have female authors and protagonists.

He is 100% correct, and no, it has nothing to do with the authors being female.
I too have noticed this at the biggest bookstore chain in Romania, Carturesti. They have an English section, and that is where I usually go, as English-Romanian translations are usually terrible.

2-4 years ago, you could still find some good stuff amongst the slop. (1/10)
I found the Powder Mage trilogy, which is probably my favorite dark fantasy series yet. I found "We Ride The Storm", a dark fantasy world which takes place in a more South-East Asian inspired world than the usual Medieval Europe (written by a woman, btw).

Now? Nothing. (2/10)

History๐Ÿงต:

There are many harmful Wehraboo myths. But I think one of the lesser known, yet perfidious ones is "Hitler spared the Allies at Dunkirk".

I decided to talk about it because I've seen many well-meaning people cite it as fact, opening the door for other myths. (1/?) Image
The Wehraboo line goes something like "Hitler halted the Panzer divisions because he didn't want to slaughter the Brits and later ally with them. But the evil Brits rewarded him by bombing Berlin."

The flaw in this narrative is that it takes Germany's version at face value (2/?) Image
The reason for Hitler halting the Panzer divisions is very simple:

The Battle of France may have been relatively short, but it was very high intensity. It wasn't a cakewalk, regardless of what accounts with anime girls in German uniforms icons or SS runes in their bio say. (3/?) Image

This picture encapsulates exactly what I believe is wrong with modern fiction books, specifically their nihilism.

This is a Soviet Artillery crew during a brief lull in the Battle of Moscow (1941). What does this have to do with modern writing or nihilism? Allow me to explain๐Ÿงต Image
As I'm sure most of you know, in 1941, the USSR was losing hard. They were up against a seemingly invincible enemy that openly wanted to exterminate their race. These men were the last line of defense before the capital fell.

And yet, they sang and laughed and cheered (1/?) Image
Humanity has an amazing ability to find cheer and levity even in the darkest of moments.
For many, or all, of those men in the picture, that would be the last music they would ever hear. And they were fine with that.

And it gave them the strength to face the Wehrmacht (2/?)

Writer post:

There is one thing that I see many writers neglect or handwave: a character's weapon. In many novels that I read, the protag's weapon is only "his sword" or "his pistol", missing out on vital characterization.

Here are a few examples of weapon characterization: Image

Image
A good place to start is James Bond and his iconic pistols. There are quite a few, yet the one most people associate with him is the Walther PPK.

Though technically a WWII pistol, it was still quite cutting edge in the 60s. It's subtle, yet finely crafted. Perfect for 007 (1/?) Image
Image
Though 007 often gets into proper gunfights with it, the PPK was more made as a concealable backup. And the small caliber means that it's easy to suppress, which he often does.

This tells us that Bond is subtle, yet capable. And that he uses the latest and greatest (2/?) Image

This is a thread about the future of my writing, "Masks of Steel" specifically. If you're interested in my writing, please read. Don't worry, I'm not stopping.

So, those of you who follow me on Royal Road have definetely noticed that MoS has not been updated in seven months...
And instead, I have focused on short stories, namely "8 Gauge 000 Dragonshot" and "Tales of Burning Steel". While these have helped a lot with fleshing out my world, keeping readers satisfied, and most importantly, improving my writing skills, I have fallen into the trap...
of never continuing MoS and instead constantly writing short stories or lore docs. This is because, to be perfectly honest, I've been staving off the inevitable. I am not happy with Masks of Steel as it is right now. When I started it a year and a half ago, my writing skills...

History thread:

The massacre of Vadu Roศ™ca:

Nicolae Ceauศ™escu, the last Romanian dictator, is a controversial figure. Some offer a sanitized version of te man: a true socialist who took a more modern position than the USSR. However, that couldn't be further from the truth (1/?) Image
In order to understand the events, one must understand post-WWII Romania: the Romanian Communist Party (PCR) was not a united force, but more a delegation of rival politicians, each wishing to one-up the other.

And the Romanians themselves, especially the peasant class... (2/?) Image
... tacitly disliked the new regime. This was amplified by PCR giving peasants land in 1945 to gain support, but then forced collectivization in 1949.

Collectivization in Romania was a slow and gradual process and would last until 1962. (Pic is a 1945 property deed) (3/?) Image
