This is the most vivid illustration I’ve seen of the broken chain of trust in medicine. 1/

2/ The AMA president, Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, cites false stats on gender medicine and suicide (“50 to 70 percent”).

Worse, he seems unaware of how evidence-based medicine works, specifically with regard to conflicts of interest in evidence evaluation.

3/ He then recommends that @BradPaquetteMI speak to an “expert” on the evidence: a recently graduated physician named Jesse Krikorian, who identifies as transgender and practices in Michigan.

4/ Krikorian’s knowledge of the research is stunningly bad, and just like Mukkamala, Krikorian fails to grasp basic principles of evidence-based medicine.

5/ For example, Krikorian appears to believe that systematic reviews are little more than reading lists, and shouldn’t override a clinician’s subjective assessment of whether a particular study is reliable.

6/ This apparent ignorance of how EBM works might explain why Krikorian recommended to Paquette 3 of the most spun and subsequently criticized studies in gender medicine: Turban et al. (2020), Tordoff et al. (2022), and Chen et al. (2023).

7/ Together, the videos vividly illustrate the broken chain of trust in American medicine with regard to pediatric gender transition.

Leaders like @AmerMedicalAssn’s Mukkamala needn’t be ideologues. Their profession demands trust in colleagues, and here, that trust has been betrayed.
