The Somnath Jyotirlinga has always been surrounded by mystery. Ancient texts describe it as a self-manifested Shivling that radiated divine energy. Legends say it was unlike any other murti ever seen in history.
Arab and Persian chronicles recorded that the Shivling at Somnath appeared to float in the air. It did not rest on the ground or any base. Many believed it was held by magnetic forces, a science far ahead of its time.
In 1025 CE Mahmud of Ghazni invaded Somnath. When his army entered the sanctum they froze in fear. Before them stood a Shivling float in space, untouched by any support. It looked like a divine miracle.
The soldiers hesitated to strike. They feared this was no ordinary stone. Some believed touching it would invite death. The sanctum was filled with silence broken only by the sound of the sea outside.
Ghazni ordered his men to destroy it. They tried with iron bars and hammers. The weapons swerved as if pulled away by unseen force. Fear gripped the invaders but greed was stronger.
After many attempts the hidden gems spilled out from Shivling. The army plundered them, yet legends say the true Jyotirlinga remained beyond destruction. The power of Somnath could not be erased.
Somnath Mandir was rebuilt again and again. Seventeen times it was attacked, seventeen times it rose with greater glory. The spirit of Somnath proved unbreakable through centuries of invasion and loss.
