Morning 10am. We came out of JFK after a 16 hr long flight, to face something I have never ever.

1) A black man, well dressed, holding a coffee in hand, was just waiting for someone like me. He looked at my tired face “Where ju wanna go brother?” come along, he said he will charge me the same as an Uber, but he has a bigger car (a GMC SUV), my head was still foggy post a long flight, so I reluctantly said yes. $160 the app said. We agreed. I didn’t have to book. The app’s utility was to settle the cost. Fare enough.

My family & I lugged our luggage to the parking lot, while this guy was walking ahead, leading us, sipping coffee. We reached his car. A huge one. He offered no help to place the heavy luggage in the dicky. I meekly unloaded the bags “This is a self service nation, better do as the Romans” I thought while slowly absorbing this culture shock. We were soon on the way. I was still suspicious
2) The guy, a 60 yr old, was pretty talkative. Friendly yet stern. Wasn’t too accommodative of the tantrums of my toddler. This gave him a cue to narrate his own life, how he had 3 kids, one of them is studying medicine, and how he can produce one more, but the lady at home doesn’t agree. He laughed & expected us to join in the joke. I was busy noticing how bumpy the road was, Suddenly a pick-up truck swerved dangerously, and it Hit our car. It wasn’t just a brush, it was a proper hit. Both cars stopped. My guy was livid. He came out to assess the damage and litigate with the other driver. I had no clue what to do. A toddler, wife and me, with luggage, stranded. The other driver was Afro-American too, most likely driving under influence. Our guy called 911.Image
3) The 911 operator was pretty calm. Asked my guy to describe his location. He managed to said “X highway, Near this Exit” and it was understood. Then he asked if his vehicle can still move, and if there are injuries. We were fine, saved by the bulk of the car. So the driver said No. The operator then in a very professional Pulp Fiction Mr Fixer manner said “So as per protocol, as you can still move and there aren’t any injuries, No police will come, you guys just exchange your IDs and file a complaint on DMV portal”. I was a bit worried, if these two don’t cooperate, who will mediate. The other pick-up driver looked like someone who carries a gun in the glove compartment. Thankfully they were cooperative. And we were on our way after 10 mins. The truck driver, continued to drive rashly. I could smell weed.

You visit a country, find out about its crime, but also convince yourself these are outliers, and it will never happen to you, but when it does, you have no cue how to process. In US the only racism/rudeness you will face as an Indian is from the Blacks & Hispanics. Another incident happened at the Times Sq Subway station. That’s for some other day :)

You will relate to this.

When you visit the erstwhile Bengal presidency (Bihar/Bengal) There are some English words the locals picked from the colonisers. Some examples

1) बुशर्ट - Actually a Bush shirt, worn by the English to counter the tropical weather. Loose fitted big collared shirt. Which became the Safari suitImage
2) Fast friend: Which connotes close friendship. The origin is actually “Steadfast friend” from Old English.

“हमारे बहुत फास्ट फ्रेंड है झा जी”
3) Circuit house- which used to be the official guesthouse for visiting British officers to lodge.

Clock tower or Ghantaghar - to keep time. Usually in the European style in the city center.

Company Bagh: A resting place for East India Co officers.

JIO is streaming IPL for free, but there is something else that will change the game.

We have two TVs at my parental home. One 26 inches another 44 inches bought 10 years apart, screen sizes collinear with our family’s fortunes. Non-smart TVs both. And they have stayed. (1/n)
The thing is Indians rarely upgrade TVs. There are 200 million TV households out of which only 22 million are smart Internet enabled. (~90% dumb TVs)

So JIO has launched this new media cable, which lets u connect your phone to your TV & make it smart. Even an old BPL Tv (2/n)
You can watch all the content from the Internet on the big screen. So IPL being free + incentive to make your TV smart, can eat away a lot of market share from Paid Tv subscription & will make it obsolete.

Best part? they have kept it Telecom operator agnostic. (3/n)

I have maintained this, India should stop playing Cricket with Pakistan completely, the only time that nation gets relevance is when we play Cricket or there is a terror attack. After castrating their abilities for the latter, only the former is left. Cut off that validation.
I mean it’s the Cricket bravado that gives their ministers the fake chutzpah of calling a sitting PM a butcher. Such comments have great meme value internally. Externally they remain Ostracised beggars.
Thinking Sports builds bridges and eases tensions is just fantasy. Each Cricketing encounter is added to the long list of 1948, 65, 71, 99..

The earl grey tea sipping liberati may claim this as a socio-cultural win sitting in their green lawns “Oh look how many Kohli fans udhar”

Often a visit to Bihar unearths some old Victorian relics in the English they picked from the colonisers. Two examples

1) बुशर्ट - Actually a Bush shirt, worn by the English to counter the tropical weather. Loose fitted big collared shirt. Which became the Safari suit
2) Fast friend: Which connotes close friendship. The origin is actually “Steadfast friend” from Old English.

3) Good name:

As in “What’s your Good name Sir?” I guess this is just a literal translation of Shubh naam (शुभ नाम)

“Aapka shubh naam?”

Day 13 of isolation.

Isolating coz I am Covid negative. Coz everyone else in my house is/was positive. 4 members including Baby Z. Thankfully everybody recovered. Elders take Insulin twice a day, yet escaped with minor symptoms. Coz Vaccine. Don't miss yours :)
The toughest call was on Day 7. My vaccination slot. Most people told me to give it up, as I had a high risk of infection. So I got a rapid test done on 6th evening. Negative. Drove to the Hospital next morning. Got myself vaccinated + 4 days of no outside contact. Phew
Baby Z was the 1st one to get it. (Mostly from the domestic help) She beat it within a day. Had fever & rashes. And gave it to her mom/grandmom. Missus (non-vaccinated) had it the toughest, high CRP & some shortness of breath for a day. Grandmom (vaccinated) had just some cough
