Trump Pressures 🇪🇺Europe on 🇷🇺Russian Oil Purchases a 🧵

1/ During a “Coalition of the Willing” video call led by @EmmanuelMacron, 🇺🇸@POTUS urged European leaders to stop buying Russian oil, emphasizing that such purchases fund Russia’s war in 🇺🇦. He cited that Russia earned approximately €1.1 billion from EU fuel sales over a year.
2/ While most EU countries ended imports of Russian crude in 2022 and refined fuel in 2023, there are still exceptions – most notably 🇭🇺and 🇸🇰– as well as refined products flowing indirectly via third countries like🇮🇳.
3/ The call occurred in a larger context where Europe and Ukraine were coordinating security guarantees post-war.
4/ Despite the threats, the Trump administration has not introduced new sanctions on Russia. However, it has imposed tariffs on India tied to its purchases of Russian oil.
5/ Trump stressed that this conflict isn't solely the U.S.'s responsibility, asserting Europe must increase its defense efforts and contributions. His tone reflected reluctance to expand American involvement further.

🧵: How did COVID-19 affect economic growth comparisons globally? A new @OECD_Stat study dives into non-market output measurement.

The paper explores whether different methods for measuring non-market output (like health & education services) impacted the comparability of economic growth estimates during COVID-19. Let’s unpack it!
1/ Non-market output (gov-provided services) is tricky to measure since there are no market prices. During COVID, health & education were hit hard—hospitals were overwhelmed, schools went online. Did measurement methods skew cross-country GDP comparisons? 🏥🏫
2/ The study looks at 38 OECD countries from 2010-2023, focusing on Gross Value Added (GVA) in health, education, and total economy. It tests four methods: deflation (input/output prices) and direct indicators (input/output measures). 📈
