This episode of @FrontBurnerCBC should go down as one of the most important interviews in the history of 🇨🇦’s public broadcaster. @UNICEF’s John Elder details his 1st-hand account of the world’s 1st live-streamed genocide, w/ an agonizing focus on Gaza’s children. A brief 🧵
.@jayme_poisson asks Elder, who has worked in war zones for 20 years, how Gaza compares. He says: “I have never ever seen that physical destruction to the level of Gaza and I’ve certainly never seen the physical devastation to children’s bodies on a scale that I’ve seen in Gaza.”
He also says he’s never seen “that level of deprivation” w/ regard to 🇮🇱’s forced starvation of Gaza, & calls Gaza “apocalyptic”. He reminds listeners that @UNICEF called 🇮🇱’s annihilation of Gaza a “war on children quite early on” & that they did not do that “for a headline.”
You can tell by her voice that @jayme_poisson is extremely disturbed listening to Elder describe the impacts of the genocide on individual children. It’s traumatizing. What should perhaps be the most horrifying aspect for her listeners is that their govt is deeply complicit.
Canadians must implore @MarkJCarney & @AnitaAnandMP to listen to this account of the worst crime of the 21st century. If the PM & FM had any conscience whatsoever, they would apply maximum pressure on 🇮🇱 to end the genocide. @CanadianPM & @CanadaFP know the truth & have no excuse

Going through boxes from my parents’ storage, I stumbled upon a school project I did at the Jewish day school I attended for 9 years. It’s from either 1999 or 2000 & is very disturbing. A 🧵 about Zionist indoctrination of Jewish children outside 🇮🇱. Pics of the project below 👇
The project was called “a Project in Honour of the State of Israel” & the drawing was the cover. As you can see, it shows all of historic Palestine as being Israel, w/ a total erasure of the West Bank & Gaza. It’s no wonder I never heard the word Palestine until high school.
I also didn’t know what a Palestinian was. I’d never been taught the word despite the school’s focus on this issue. Here’s a page from the project about 🇮🇱’s population. It says 83% of people are Jewish & 17% are “not Jewish”. Imagine describing any other democracy in such terms.
CORRECTION: anti-genocide protestors are targeting an event recruiting volunteers for an army of a country the World Court believes is plausibly committing genocide, & which executes a system of apartheid as identified by the world’s and 🇮🇱’s leading human rights orgs. 1/4
It’s a travesty that @JewishOttawa & the JCC deems it appropriate for a space dedicated to Jewish communal life to be used for such horrifically unethical purposes. This 4th generation Jewish Ottawan who was raised on that campus says mazel tov to anyone protesting this. 2/4
🇮🇱 lobby groups & their supporters will do everything they can to falsely portray this protest as targeting Jews. It’s clearly targeting actions supporting a genocidal regime abroad. Shame on @JewishOttawa & the JCC!!! 3/4
Joe is banking on us not reading this report. The data he cites simply isn't in it. I'm confident he never read it. While I don't agree w/ a lot of the authour's framings & assumptions, here are some findings Joe wouldn't want you to see. A brief-ish 🧵
The report concludes that for most individuals & most groups, anti-Zionism isn't antisemitism (despite @CIJAinfo, @AHousefather, @DeborahLyonsSE & @Arturmaks' racist claim that it is). Most critics of 🇮🇱 in 🇨🇦 don't have negative attitudes toward Jews.
The report finds that 49% of Canadians agree that "The war 🇮🇱 is conducting in Gaza is an example of genocide." A # that the authour notes "significantly exceed(s)" those with the opposite view. The rest don't know/no response. That's 1 in 2 people in 🇨🇦 thinking 🇮🇱's genocidal.
My MP, @SophieChatel1, blocked me directly after replying to my thread & releasing the statement below. I just discovered she unblocked me so I proceeded to unblock her back. Now that I can see her comments & weigh in, here it goes. Thanks in advance for replying, Sophie. 🧵 1/7
Sophie: u make a blanket statement that the IDF “aim at Hamas infrastructure and members". But we spoke about my wife’s family whose neighbour’s house was directly targeted despite not being Hamas infrastructure & the family of 14 inside not being Hamas members. Any thoughts? 2/7
Since your statement, your constituent’s family members have suffered more murder targeted by the IDF, extreme physical harm such as lost limbs, abductions, destruction of their homes, theft of life savings by the IDF & forced starvation & dehydration. None are Hamas members. 3/7
After an in-person meeting, phone conversations, texts & email exchanges, I’ve given up on my MP @SophieChatel1 condemning the murder of my wife's uncle, cousin and his two-year-old daughter by Israel, or taking any principled stand against the #Gaza_Genocide. 📷1/9
I met w/ Chatel a week and a half ago for over an hour, w/ @AliEhsassi joining partway through. Both Liberal MPs serve on the House of Commons foreign affairs committee, so their voices carry weight. Both refuse to call for a ceasefire despite agreeing w/ my points in private 2/9
Chatel recognized that Israel’s goal of “eliminating Hamas” would not make Israelis safer. She agreed that if Hamas could hypothetically be destroyed by Israel, it would only engender more fundamentalist leadership in its place and we’d be much further from any resolution. 3/9
