I don’t know that I fully understood the casual sadism on the left until I transgressed on the Covid vaccine question. You realize that all the pretexts they have for wishing the worst on people who transgress their orthodoxies are just that- pretexts and cover. It’s not actually “public health”, it’s not actually “Zionism”, it’s not actually “transphobia”. The sadism is there a priori, looking for a home. all of those things are little holding compartments for it
Like, they can tell you til they’re blue in the face about how they’re glad Henry Kissinger is dead because of Vietnam, but that righteousness gets pretty diluted once you realize that they’re also quite chuffed that some dude who didn’t get the Covid shot ended up dying in hospital

Here’s my big brained theory on progressives: they aren’t “smart but misguided”. They literally get terrible reads on everything and don’t have the emotional restraint to stay away from bad ideas if they think those positions “reflect well on them” or make them seem smart to their peers. They can’t resist eating the marshmallow and have a paper-thin conception of what it means to be ‘smart’ that doesn’t include being able to learn from mistakes
In short, they’re actually fuckin stupid as hell, and doubly so for continuing to walk around feeling smart all the time
Their biggest strength is self-preservation and so they tend not to self-sabotage very much with bad decisions and unnecessary risks, but then wrongly attribute this to ‘intelligence’
I can’t think of anything more “debunked” in the post-Trump and post-Covid era than the continued insistence that an orientation towards Liberal politics is associated with things like intellectual curiosity and an aversion to authoritarianism
I don’t even believe things like “smart dogs are easier to train” as explanations for why they all, for example, somehow didn’t realize that Joe Biden was cognitively impaired. “Lack of curiosity” is practically the signature feature of how they think
Yes, there are probably more measurable low-iq conservatives than liberals. But also, yes, the bell curve midwit meme is REAL
Listened to Taibbi and Walter Kirn’s cast last night and they were pointing something out re: the disinformation industry that I noticed when I took a work related course a few months ago in “behavioural insights”
The desired behaviours to be arrived at all seem to have been pre-determined by what feels like some higher, nameless board…but there’s no “insight” from the insights team as to why these are desirable
but ultimately, the refusal to explain this is tied in with what feels like the most crucial behavioural outcome in this whole field, which is blind trust in authority and the presumption of an infallible clerisy- or as @walterkirn said “a Pope of Covid”
The thing about elderly millenial guys who went from Vice 1.0 hipsters to Current Thing progressives is that most of them were not “bush era leftists”. Most guys like this don’t know basic stuff like “neocons are all democrats now” because they were apolitical before Trump
but they’re all like “fuckin Ariel Pink man…that guy’s a Fascist now man. Fuck that guy” lol
so all of these guys now are like Bill Kristol After Dark, but the reason they seem to have no self-awareness is that they have no awareness of who people like Bill Kristol even are. Trump/Proud Boys etc..are the first political villains they know
The greatest feat of propaganda over the past 2 years was to convince the entire liberal chattering class that the only person who might question government appointed public health experts is local idiot, “Sharon64683658 from Twitter”
The types of people who bought that line are the real enemy
“Haha some fuckin hick thinks they know more than a doctor”
