We're going to see a lot more of this kind of thing in the weeks and months to come. Here's the thing: It's not just a reaction to CK's murder. And it's not just a crass and gross grift using scripture. It isn't just rank idolatry.
2/ It also is a realignment of the MAGA/CN zeitgeist. For a decade, the MAGA/CN world has held on to Trump's molesting hands and called them holy. But oh ... how heavy those hands are and how difficult they are to defend.
3/ Make no mistake, it has been difficult for many of the compromise MAGA Christen and MAGA followers to defend Trump's idiocy, his sexual crimes, his horrific invective, etc. Some of them (not all) have grown weary of defending him so blindly and fully.
4/ It's why many of them refuse to engage when valid discussion and critiques are brought up. They simply shut down. They know they can't defend a rapist, pedophile protector, etc. But ... they CAN defend a murder victim. They can wrongly make him a demigod.
5/ Charlie, while a heavy load because of his racist comments, his dive into white christian nationalism and white cultural supremacy is a lighter load to carry that a pedophile protector and self-confessed molester. Even more, his murder gives him a cachet of innocence.
6/ Now, those that have actually read his words and heard him speak know that innocence is not what his followers make it out to be. There are inexcusable things he's done and said. But ... again ... they are far easier to ignore than anything Trump has done or said, to them.
7/ When you see these kinds of things come down the media pipe (and you will see MANY of them in the months to come) know they aren't just a grift, they aren't just a blasphemous use of scripture, they are also an attempt to sanitize MAGA in the waters of victimhood.
8/ PS: The issue with using scripture for something like this is that it destroys the witness of scripture and the Gospel. Charlie, for all his good as a person (and everyone is inhabited by both good and bad) ... was demonstrably racist.
9/ He openly used the same arguments against Jews that were used against them by Streicher in the 1930s. He belittled people from time to time, etc. To tie scripture to open racist comments is not only an act of bad faith, but an insult to the Cross.
10/ Better to celebrate that Charlie was a Christian. I'm glad he was. Now he is with the Lord and whatever hurts caused him to speak vile things from time to time has been healed within him. I wish they had been healed in him on this Earth, but evil exists and evil killed him.
11/ All the above aside, watch the MAGA/CN sphere closely for the few months. You'll probably notice many attempts to sanitize the movement, Trump, and CK using his murder as the brush. His murder was a tremendous evil, but don't let that be a cover for MAGA.

1/ I’ll be lecturing later this fall … and I thought it would be interesting to post the reading list, in case anyone is looking for some ideas for fall reading material. They all speak, in one way or another to how empire and faith change each other, usually for the worse.
2/ Most of these are used only as citation sources, with only a couple being fully required. Some are dry as dust, but they’re all solid, if a bit niche.
So, if anyone would like some unsolicited suggestions to add to your every growing reading pile, here are a few:
3/ Solberg - A Church Undone
Kruse - One Nation Under God
Coley - Ministers of Propaganda
Lo Mascolo - The Christian Right in Europe
Mollete - Resistances chetiennes a la Nazification des esprits
Bonino - Doing Theology in a Revolutionary Situation
Hauerwas - Approaching the End
1/ This is a good time to remind ourselves that MAGA adherents are disqualified from all Church offices/positions, be they official or volunteer. Not necessarily because they commit heinous acts ... but because they are so compromised they excuse evil in others for their benefit.
2/ If an elder went before a congregation and said "We have chosen a new pastor, and yes, he is a convicted felon, adjudicated rapist, self-confessed molester, and serial adulterer with delusions of grandeur ... but we think he will give us what we want" people would leave.
3/ Yet, a majority of American Evangelicals have done exactly that in the political sphere. They've put aside their professed morals and excused themselves from the same moral baseline they desire the power of law to impose on others. Hypocrisy and compromise silence the Gospel.
1/ No Dobson obituary is complete, or honest, if it does not include the fact that he is responsible for millions of Evangelicals reducing the value of women to their vagina and treating children as mere accessories to the parent’s reputation.
2/ Dobson’s approach to child-rearing was essentially nothing more than a prosperity gospel for parents. “Do X, and Y will surely happen.”
3/ Not only did his approach deny the historical record and biblical example of humanity and human nature … it opened the door to countless instances of abuse being rained down on kids simply because they acted like human beings rather than perfect automatons.
1/ The Evangelical Christian ecosystem has taught for 50 years that our battles are not against flesh and blood, but warfare against spiritual principalities and powers. We’ve used martial language in our sermons, over and over again.
2/ We write books about manliness and praise the warrior over the humble sacrificer. We praised politicians who spoke about beating people up, and called poor migrants animals and those who advocated for them “the enemy.”
3/ We preached that every Christian is a warrior fighting for babies, western culture, America, and apple pie on Sunday. Then, we went lobbying on Monday to make our wills known and obeyed via Caesar’s political system.
1/ Let's Talk about this: Meg's comment demonstrates two specific things about much of the current American Evangelical paradigm. Two things that we should be thinking about and discussing both in the leadership and the laity.
2/ First, and Meg know this answer but wouldn't dare say it lest she face the wrath of handlers, the real issue here isn't where a trans person would use the restroom. That's a VERY easy answer, which can be handled any one of several ways, and I'll speak to that at the end.
3/ What @megbasham is really saying is that trans people are not welcome in churches *because it makes things hard for congregants.* She's making clear that comfort of the congregation matters more than demonstrating welcoming arms to those who come to seek the Lord's table.
1/ Here’s the problem @megbasham: You push yourself on the public and claim to be a journalist. First … every REAL journalist has a basic understanding of due diligence and actual investigative techniques. You do not.
2/ In case you didn’t realize it, your hilariously pithy and pearl clutching response above is a literal admission to commenting and attacking the podcast without even finishing it. Zero due diligence. Just pearl clutching.
Second, your words show you to be a hollow hypocrite.
3/ You malign others because an ad network they used has a client that is affirming. Ok. So you’ve made your moral position known. At the same time you openly do fluff videos for an open racist, and shill for a rapist in office.
