Booking as a guest means flying the same route, for often the same price, and earning nothing for it.

2. The gate request that gets free upgrades more than people expect
At the gate, or through the Fly Delta app under "Upgrade Requests," you can request a complimentary upgrade using miles or as a Medallion member but the request has to be made. It isn't automatic.

Delta's upgrade list clears based on status tier and request timing, and unrequested seats often go unfilled simply because most economy passengers never ask.
