1/ Let's talk about this:
First, there is no such thing as the "progressive gaze." It helps to remember that Rigney & his boss not only are two major proponents of the antichrist idea that empathy is evil, but both also protected an employee who molested a student in their care. Image
2/ Second, there is NO such thing as a progressive Christians. Nor is there such a thing as a conservative Christian. There are only two types of Christians: Those who act like Christ, emulate him sacrificially, follow his mission and enact it as He did ... and those who don't.
3/ 99% of the time, those Meg, Joe, Wilson, etc label as "progressive" are merely believers who picked up Christ's Cross and followed Him. Meg is the darling Evangelical Eva Braun of this era, and sells her words to people like pro-slavery Wilson and pedophile Trump.
4/ But even taking the above into account, she isn't wrong. Charlie's death IS exposing indoctrination. Namely, the indoctrination that has suborned christians like Meg. Meg, who poses as virtuous and a bastion of faithful Christianity ... is far from it.
5/ Putting aside the way she sells her words and face to the highest bidder (honestly, who defends an open kinist and pro-slavery proponent) ... it helps to consider Meg's personal views and the space she now inhabits.
6/ A brief, and incomplete list: She's utterly given to Christian Nationalist heresy. She's openly reposted a woman who rehashes known KKK apologia. She does fluff pieces for a sex molester protector.
7/ She cried about people publishing or working through companies that employ non-cis people ... and then mysteriously went silent in cowardice when she was outed as an author published by a company doing the same.
8/ And of course, the cherry on top is the most predictable: She is a supporter of a pedophile protector, adjudicated rapist, and self-confessed molester.

Friends, moral compromise eats at the soul and body. Don't be like Meg.
9/ PS: Charlie's murder was horrific. It should never have happened. I'm glad he was, at least, a Christian ... and is now with Christ. I pray healing for his fam. At the same time, CK said openly racist things that are indefensible. Meg hates that fact but can't counter it.
10/ So she attacks anyone who mentions it. Charlie could have said "I don't like Michelle Obama and I think she's dumb." Stupid to do so as a college dropout when she was summa cum laude and top of her Harvard law class, but he could say it.
11/ Instead he said she was too dumb, and made clear he didn't like her ... and then added "You took a white persons slot." Friends, that is openly and unrepentantly racist. There is no job that is inherently white.
12/ The reason why MAGA shills like Meg have to try to character-assassinate others, as she did with Moore and now with Cosper is because they can't defend the words Charlie uttered or their pedophile friend. And because deep inside, they think they same way he did.
13/ Now is it possible he was just performing? Sure. But if so, they're defending a performer who used racism as a punchline and grift. In the end there is no way to dance around many of the statements, positions, and arguments he used.
14/ That fact doesn't make his murder any less horrific. But it does mean the adults in the room have to grapple with the fact that he represented part of the good in humanity and parts of the bad. MAGA doesn't believe in complexity. Just simple idolatry.

1/ "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

We're going to see a lot more of this kind of thing in the weeks and months to come. Here's the thing: It's not just a reaction to CK's murder. And it's not just a crass and gross grift using scripture. It isn't just rank idolatry. Image
2/ It also is a realignment of the MAGA/CN zeitgeist. For a decade, the MAGA/CN world has held on to Trump's molesting hands and called them holy. But oh ... how heavy those hands are and how difficult they are to defend.
3/ Make no mistake, it has been difficult for many of the compromise MAGA Christen and MAGA followers to defend Trump's idiocy, his sexual crimes, his horrific invective, etc. Some of them (not all) have grown weary of defending him so blindly and fully.

1/ I’ll be lecturing later this fall … and I thought it would be interesting to post the reading list, in case anyone is looking for some ideas for fall reading material. They all speak, in one way or another to how empire and faith change each other, usually for the worse.
2/ Most of these are used only as citation sources, with only a couple being fully required. Some are dry as dust, but they’re all solid, if a bit niche.

So, if anyone would like some unsolicited suggestions to add to your every growing reading pile, here are a few:
3/ Solberg - A Church Undone
Kruse - One Nation Under God
Coley - Ministers of Propaganda
Lo Mascolo - The Christian Right in Europe
Mollete - Resistances chetiennes a la Nazification des esprits
Bonino - Doing Theology in a Revolutionary Situation
Hauerwas - Approaching the End

1/ This is a good time to remind ourselves that MAGA adherents are disqualified from all Church offices/positions, be they official or volunteer. Not necessarily because they commit heinous acts ... but because they are so compromised they excuse evil in others for their benefit.
2/ If an elder went before a congregation and said "We have chosen a new pastor, and yes, he is a convicted felon, adjudicated rapist, self-confessed molester, and serial adulterer with delusions of grandeur ... but we think he will give us what we want" people would leave.
3/ Yet, a majority of American Evangelicals have done exactly that in the political sphere. They've put aside their professed morals and excused themselves from the same moral baseline they desire the power of law to impose on others. Hypocrisy and compromise silence the Gospel.

1/ No Dobson obituary is complete, or honest, if it does not include the fact that he is responsible for millions of Evangelicals reducing the value of women to their vagina and treating children as mere accessories to the parent’s reputation.
2/ Dobson’s approach to child-rearing was essentially nothing more than a prosperity gospel for parents. “Do X, and Y will surely happen.”
3/ Not only did his approach deny the historical record and biblical example of humanity and human nature … it opened the door to countless instances of abuse being rained down on kids simply because they acted like human beings rather than perfect automatons.

1/ The Evangelical Christian ecosystem has taught for 50 years that our battles are not against flesh and blood, but warfare against spiritual principalities and powers. We’ve used martial language in our sermons, over and over again.
2/ We write books about manliness and praise the warrior over the humble sacrificer. We praised politicians who spoke about beating people up, and called poor migrants animals and those who advocated for them “the enemy.”
3/ We preached that every Christian is a warrior fighting for babies, western culture, America, and apple pie on Sunday. Then, we went lobbying on Monday to make our wills known and obeyed via Caesar’s political system.

1/ Let's Talk about this: Meg's comment demonstrates two specific things about much of the current American Evangelical paradigm. Two things that we should be thinking about and discussing both in the leadership and the laity. Image
2/ First, and Meg know this answer but wouldn't dare say it lest she face the wrath of handlers, the real issue here isn't where a trans person would use the restroom. That's a VERY easy answer, which can be handled any one of several ways, and I'll speak to that at the end.
3/ What @megbasham is really saying is that trans people are not welcome in churches *because it makes things hard for congregants.* She's making clear that comfort of the congregation matters more than demonstrating welcoming arms to those who come to seek the Lord's table.
