#Breaking: Punjab and Haryana High Court has initiated a suo motu case over the recent incident of a lawyer roaming with a sword inside the court premises, and the alleged assault on Bar members by him.
The Court today asked the Chandigarh Police to file its response.
The Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter on the basis of a Bar Association letter.
A Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry heard the matter.
Bar Association President Sartej Singh Narula today urged the Court to pass a a gag order against Advocate Ravneet Kaur, one of the lawyers accused of carrying out the assault.
Narula: There should be a gag order against Ravneet Kaur.
Chandigarh govt counsel: Those platforms would have to be made party.
Narula: Mainly Facebook, YouTube.
UT of Chandigarh: Even if police write, they (social media platforms) take the grounds of freedom of speech. If lordship passes order, they will be bound by it.
Court was told that Ravneet Kaur posted defamatory content after the incident.
The other lawyer accused, Simranjit Singh Blassi, is reported to have had made a complaint against lawyers.
Govt counsel says it has not been converted into FIR
Court: Till proceedings are pending, no further action against any member of the bar on complaint made by the accused-advocate.
Senior Advocate Amit Jhanji has also informed the Court that an FIR has been registered against the lawyers accused of assault, Simranjit Singh Blassi and Ravneet Kaur

SG Tushar Mehta: we have published draft regulations. 391 suggestions and inputs were received. Thereafter an expert committee was formed. They have gone into it… Some of the suggestions have been found to be favourable. And a report has been filed before a UGC.
Sr. Adv. Indira Jaising: this was filed in 2019. Since then we have had much water flowing under the bridge. Several people have committed suicide. We are already aware that draft regulations have been published. We made the suggestions. 2 coordinate benches of this Court have attempted to address this issue as well.

On the last hearing, the Court had directed the ECI to issue a formal notice stating that Aadhaar will be accepted as an identity proof document for the inclusion of a voter to the revised voters' list being prepared as part of the exercise.

Sr. Adv. Gopal Sankarnarayanan: the ECI is moving ahead with the other states. Since we had to a large degree addressed on the legal aspect just give us a date today. If it is found that this is a perversion of a constitutional scheme we may press that this may not continue. There is no question of proceeding with other states and establishing fait accompli. An actual date may be given.
