While the world’s attention remains fixed on Ukraine, Russia is quietly securing its next strategic victory in Georgia — and the West is watching it happen in silence.
My latest article explains how Georgia has quietly become a second flank for Russia and why Western hesitation is dangerous for Europe’s security.

Just days ago, the U.S.-sanctioned tanker Olga docked at Poti port. Its operator was sanctioned in 2022 for transporting Russian weapons — yet it sailed freely into Georgia.

Under the Georgian Dream regime, the country that once symbolized democratic aspiration in the post-Soviet space has become a gateway for Russia’s sanctioned economy and military logistics. The Black Sea, vital to Europe’s energy and defense architecture, is being reshaped by Moscow’s proxies — and Tbilisi is playing its part.
Georgia’s de facto ruler, oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, built his fortune in Russia and now acts as the Kremlin’s most valuable political asset in the Caucasus. He dismantled or captured every pro-Western institution, sabotaged the Anaklia deep-sea port — a project that could have anchored Georgia to NATO’s maritime infrastructure — and allowed Russia to develop a naval base in occupied Abkhazia’s Ochamchire, giving Moscow a new launchpad into the Black Sea and Mediterranean.
This is not the behavior of a government sitting on the fence. It is the behavior of a regime actively enabling Russia’s war machine.

This year, the United Kingdom sanctioned several Georgian Dream–linked individuals, companies, and ships for assisting Russia’s war effort. Yet Western engagement with Georgia remains timid and confused. Statements of concern replace strategy, and diplomatic caution replaces moral clarity, while the true pro-European opposition sits in prison — over 114 activists, journalists, and human rights defenders silenced by a Kremlin-style system of repression.
Let’s be clear: ignoring Georgia’s democratic forces is not neutrality — it is complicity. Every time the West turns away, it signals to Moscow that corruption and coercion can replace democracy along NATO’s frontier.
5/6🧵
If Georgia falls fully into Russia’s sphere, the Black Sea becomes a Russian lake, Ukraine’s southern flank is further exposed, and NATO’s southeastern corridor — stretching from the Baltics to the Mediterranean — is compromised. Georgia’s geography is not a detail; it is a strategic hinge between Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Whoever controls Georgia controls the energy and transport arteries that connect the continents.
Supporting Georgia’s civil society and real opposition is therefore not a gesture of solidarity — it is an act of self-defense. It costs little but prevents much: another Russian military foothold, another Belarus, another war.

And yet, Georgia still resists.
Despite intimidation, imprisonment, and disinformation, the Georgian people continue to protest. Every week, thousands gather in Tbilisi and across the regions — waving European flags, demanding freedom, and refusing to surrender their future to a Russian oligarch’s shadow rule. Students, journalists, veterans, and clergy stand side by side, proving that the democratic spirit has not been extinguished.
The streets of Tbilisi remind us that the fight for Europe’s values is not taking place only in Tallinn or Warsaw — it is also taking place in Georgia, right now.
History rarely gives clear warnings. Georgia is one.
The question is whether the West listens before it’s too late.

Today Georgian Dream has completely dismantled election transparency, de facto rendering the new elections meaningless. 1/5
With the new laws, independent observers are now banned from monitoring the verification device at polling station — This means there will be no way to verify who is voting and whose data the power usurpers are using to falsify elections. 2/5
Voter identification checks have been restricted — Opposition election commission members and independent observers will no longer be able to verify whether a voter’s personal information matches the data in the official voter list. 3/5
In this global political turmoil, a world that feels like a parallel universe, there’s little space or attention for #Georgia, a country of just 3 million. It’s time to change that. Here’s a brief yet extensive take on it: 🧵
1. I have been protesting GD’s unjust actions since 2021, with 2023 and 2024 being my peak. I somehow understand my country’s cultural, social, and political context and allow myself to share my thoughts and views.
2. 135 days since GD rigged elections, 103 since they froze the EU bid. No bombs drop, but we are at war—people are arrested, beaten, and threatened daily for opposing the Russian hybrid war we are in.
In today’s thread, I’ll break down why the West, from a purely pragmatic standpoint, cannot afford to let the Republic of Georgia 🇬🇪 slip into the hands of Russia, China, and Iran.🧵The stakes are high, and here’s why.

The Middle Corridor is A lifeline for Europe. It bypasses Russia, connecting Central Asia to Europe via Georgia and the Black Sea. Energy, goods, and geopolitical stability flow through this route. If the West loses Georgia, the corridor collapses, and Russia and China win.
2/11
Anaklia Deep-Water Port was set to make Georgia a key EU-Asia transit hub, bypassing Russia. It could strengthen Europe’s supply chains, reduce reliance on Russian ports, and secure vital trade routes. It was canceled in 2020 under Russian regime of Georgia.

The Kremlin's Propaganda Playbook in Georgia (2024)
EADaily, a Russian propaganda outlet, published a “2024 analysis” on Georgia. Their message? Sanctions on Georgian Nightmare (GD) and Tbilisi’s protests are the Kremlin’s Top Concerns. 🧵 Let’s break it down ⬇️ 🇬🇪

Kremlin propagandist Reshetnyak identifies 2 key threats: 1. Western sanctions, which “cripple” pro-Russian forces in Georgia. 2. Protests in Tbilisi, which block Russia's influence.
The message is clear: Both tools are effective. Strengthen sanctions & support protests.
2/11
Reshetnyak singles out the anti-GD protests in Tbilisi as a key obstacle to Kremlin goals in Georgia. He labels protesters as "anti-Russian elements" and warns of their influence.
Translation: Protests WORK. They disrupt Russia’s narrative and agenda.
Georgia Protests: After a month of nationwide protests, the people of Georgia have made significant progress against the illegitimate pro-Russian Georgian Dream party. 🧵Here's an overview of what has happened and the key results

Protesters took to the streets in 40+ cities across Georgia, making their voices heard and pushing for systemic change. The protest has been ongoing for 33 days and will continue until victory is achieved.
