Crypto Gambling does not produce anything in the real economy
It uses resources while being a fun distraction and activity for users AT BEST
And at worst it destroys the entire lives of a small but significant (because of the damage done to these people and their partners/children etc.) portion of users
In a room of 10,000 random people you'd be unlikely to find someone more capable than her
And she channels that energy into creating a hyper efficient and lucrative scheme
That is a NET NEGATIVE on society
Our culture and institutions that have developed over centuries and beyond
Have somehow pushed this woman (and the many more like her, I do not even blame her individually) to unfathomable resources from damaging the very society that gave her the path
and yes, there is individual choice
But societal level is what is more important. If this were illegal and considered taboo (it should be) like it was just decades ago it would not be her path
But so much of our society rewards people working in these damaging industries
Gambling would have been considered low-class in the past besides a few specific and ritualized places
(think dressing up for the Kentucky Derby as a destination and trip)
A little periodic gambling is fine
Being able to make bets at any time from the magic screen in your pocket is not
Gambling being low-class served the culture
As the behavior is damaging to the society at large and is not productive in any way except in CERTAIN analysis in a fundamental economic way
Money spent on gambling now is lost
Yes money changes hands, but the net money bet does not change
But resources in time, money, and energy are used to create and advertise the companies and markets used
And yes, people get jobs and they make a living for these companies
But all their energy is spent on running something that produces ZERO VALUE
it does not feed you, it does not educate/train you, it does not transport you, it does not produce bricks or lumber or rubber, or any raw/finished resource

The First World War, 1914, was not really the first WORLD WAR
Aztecs, Incans, Spaniards, Somalis, Egyptians, Malays, Turks, and more all fought against eachother
...in 1578
Thread 🧵 on the Castilian War
The Castilian War (or Spanish expedition to Borneo) was fought for a few months in 1578
The still expanding Spanish Empire was entering Southeast Asia
Pushing from the West into the Ottoman sphere of Influence
As the Spanish began to settle in what is now the Phillipines, tensions rose with the Brunei Sultanate
Because of the existing war between the Hapsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire, it was natural for the Ottomans to assist Brunei if war were to break out
