Boycotts were a prelude to the violence of Kristallnacht and the subsequent systematic exclusion of Jews from German economic life. But, boycotts targeting Jewish businesses and professionals is nothing new…
Boycotts against Jewish businesses have occurred historically, most prominently in Nazi Germany and Mandatory Palestine. In Nazi Germany, the boycott was a state-organized campaign that began with private harassment and escalated into official discrimination and violence.
In Mandatory Palestine, Arab leaders organized boycotts against Jewish businesses to economically harm the Jewish population, which sometimes involved violence against those who violated the boycott.
These days, the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement is leading these efforts… The BDS movement unfortunately is inherently antisemitic.
BDS campaigns, particularly on our university campuses, contribute to a hostile & unsafe environment for Jewish students & others who support Israel. These campaigns often target individuals for their perceived or actual connection to Israel. They exclude Jewish people…
BDS activists & campaigns use language or imagery as antisemitic tropes, such as allegations of Jewish power or dual loyalty. Placing "don't buy" stickers on Israeli products are reminiscent of the Nazi era's campaign against Jewish businesses.
The core goal of the BDS movement is the elimination of Israel as a Jewish state, not just a change in its policies. It’s very radical & racist.
