Veteran teachers are suing California over policies requiring schools to affirm a child’s “gender identity” while hiding it from parents.

This scandal could set a national precedent on whether schools can legally exclude parents from pivotal decisions.

Teachers were told to use a student’s new chosen name & pronouns in class but to switch back to the legal name & pronouns when speaking with family.

According to district policy, parents or caretakers were labeled as people who “do not have a legitimate need for the information.”

Even if a parent asked directly about a name or pronoun change, teachers were told to deflect.

Veteran teachers Elizabeth Mirabelli & Lori Ann West said they couldn’t, in good conscience, deceive parents.

“Deceiving parents is wholly unacceptable.” -Elizabeth Mirabelli

They asked to be exempted from the policy. The district said NO.

Mirabelli & West filed a federal lawsuit:
Mirabelli v. Olson.

They argue the district’s policy violates:
🔹 The First Amendment (free speech + free exercise)
🔹 The Fourteenth Amendment (parental rights)

On October 15, 2025, a federal judge certified the case as a class action, covering 300,000+ teachers and 5 million+ parents and students across California.

A pivotal hearing is set for November 17.

The case could determine whether the state can force teachers to lie & whether parents have the final say in their children’s upbringing.
