A Century Before Covid, One Doctor Did Everything Right. They Still Attacked Him.

Dr James Niven isn’t a household name — but he should be.

When the 1918 flu hit Manchester, he was the one man who refused to pretend it would “blow over.”
While others downplayed the danger, Niven rang every alarm he could. He shut schools, warned factories, pushed masks and ventilation, and begged the public to help protect each other.

He was mocked.
Accused of exaggerating.
Told he was “fear-mongering” and “hurting the economy.”

Sound familiar?

And yet… Manchester ended up with one of the lowest death rates of any major UK city during the Spanish Flu.
Not because the virus was kinder there — but because one exhausted doctor refused to stay quiet.

Niven kept working while colleagues collapsed. He stayed at his desk as the city fell ill around him. He saw bodies piling up in the streets, he read death certificates by the hundreds, he carried the guilt of every life he couldn’t save.

And when it was finally over?

He received no parade.
No honours.
No national recognition.

Even worse — the stress and trauma of those years haunted him. The weight of being the only one shouting into the storm broke something in him. He took his own life in 1925.

A man who saved thousands died thinking he’d failed.

History owes him better.
We owe him better.

Dr. James Niven is a reminder that public health work is thankless, lonely, and often attacked while it’s happening — only to be praised decades later, when the cost has already been paid.

Remember his name.
Remember his courage.
And remember the lesson:
Mocking prevention doesn’t age well.Image
