Sociologist Randall Collins talks a lot about the psychology of spree shooters. Establishing emotional dominance is a big deal for spree shooters. They get off on the terror. Usually, that breaks down as soon as cops show up, when they either kill themselves or timidly give up.
It's a dozen years old, but Collin's piece on Adam Lanza and the Sandy Hook shooting is a classic discussion of the psychology of school shooters. Collin's is 84, but still writing. Needs to say something about Trantifa violence.
This is why I said that the Brown shooter walking away was unusual for a school shooter, as typical school shooters don't have a plan for getting away. They keep shooting until they're killed, shoot themselves or give up.
