👉 COVID and the Brain’s Dopamine Buffer: What the Science Actually Shows

Let me unpack what David is talking about here:

🔹 The locus coeruleus is a tiny brainstem structure that acts like the brain’s on/off switch for alertness, threat response, and sleep stages.
🔹 During REM sleep, it’s meant to switch off, so the brain can dream while the body stays still.

This system relies heavily on dopamine to keep sleep, movement, and arousal properly separated.

🧠 What the new research adds

The paper David links to used human dopamine brain cells grown from stem cells and exposed them to SARS-CoV-2.

What they found is important:
•The dopamine cells didn’t necessarily die
•Instead, many entered a state called senescence
•That means the cells are alive, but older, slower, less flexible, and energy-inefficient

In plain terms:
👉 the system still works, but with less buffer and less resilience

This is what David means by “dopa senescence.”

😴 Why this shows up as REM sleep problems

When dopamine systems lose flexibility:
•REM sleep can “leak”
•Muscle paralysis during dreams weakens
•People may move, talk, or act out dreams

That’s REM Behaviour Disorder (RBD) — something we usually associate with older adults, not young people.

So seeing it in young people with Long COVID is concerning, because it suggests premature functional aging of dopamine regulation, not degeneration, but loss of reserve.

👧 What this means for children with ADHD

Kids with ADHD already rely on dopamine systems that:
•Work harder to regulate attention
•Struggle more with transitions (sleep ↔ wake, calm ↔ alert)
•Have narrower margins for overload

If an infection like COVID further reduces dopamine resilience:
•Sleep becomes less restorative
•Parasomnias increase
•Emotional regulation worsens
•Recovery after school or stress takes longer

Nothing “new” is wrong — the coping window just shrinks.

This helps explain why some children seem more dysregulated after infections, even when tests look normal.

🧓 What this means for people with Parkinson’s

In Parkinson’s:
•Dopamine neurons are already vulnerable
•Sleep disturbances often appear years before motor symptoms

This research doesn’t say COVID causes Parkinson’s — but it does suggest:
•Viral stress can further burden already-fragile dopamine systems
•Sleep disorders like RBD may worsen or appear earlier
•Loss of resilience may accelerate symptoms in susceptible individuals

That’s why clinicians watch RBD so closely in Parkinson’s care.

❗ What this does not mean
•It does not mean everyone will develop Parkinson’s
•It does not mean permanent brain damage is inevitable
•It does not mean this happens to everyone who gets COVID

It means dopamine systems are sensitive to inflammatory stress, and when their buffer is reduced, regulation — especially sleep and arousal — becomes fragile.

🧩 The takeaway

COVID doesn’t have to destroy brain cells to cause long-term effects.
It can make key dopamine systems age faster functionally — and that shows up first in sleep, regulation, and resilience.

That’s the link David is pointing to — and why it deserves careful attention.

The Flu Surge Is the Warning Shot. What Comes After Could Be Worse.
🧵⬇️
Right now, the US is in the steep upward phase of a major flu wave, driven largely by H3N2 — a strain historically linked to higher hospitalisations and worse outcomes, especially for older adults and children.

This isn’t just about flu.
When flu is everywhere, it tells us something simple and important:

The air is risky right now.

The same shared indoor air spreading flu also spreads COVID-19, RSV, and other respiratory infections.
Flu is just the first virus to surge.

🔥 Kids & COVID: The Receipts They Don’t Want You to See

People keep saying “COVID is harmless for kids.”
So here’s what large studies from the UK, US, Kazakhstan, Brazil, India, and elsewhere actually show.

Short version:
COVID can affect kids’ hearts and blood vessels for months to years.
Repeated infections increase risk.
And we still don’t have long-term data on what repeated vascular hits mean for children.

The early signals? Not nothing.
1️⃣ UK (14 million kids)

A major 2025 analysis found that children with confirmed COVID had higher risk over the next 12 months of:
• myocarditis
• pericarditis
• blood clots
• inflammatory/vascular disorders
• low platelets

Importantly, these risks were higher and lasted longer after infection than anything seen after vaccination.
2️⃣ USA (RECOVER – over 1 million controls)

Comparing 300,000 infected kids to 915,000 uninfected, COVID infection was linked to increased risk of:
• hypertension
• arrhythmias
• myocarditis
• heart failure
• cardiomyopathy
• clots
• chest pain & palpitations
• even cardiac arrest

This was seen in healthy kids too, not only those with pre-existing conditions.
