Hi John, do you have a source for your claim that 40% of Ethereum nodes run on AWS?

I believe the real figure is about 12.4% (source: probelab.io/ethereum/topol…). If all AWS regions went down tomorrow, Ethereum would continue processing transactions.

You also claim that 85% of Ethereum nodes run the Geth execution client, but this is false. The real figure is closer to 41% (clientdiversity.org).

I think you also misunderstand the claims you are making about OFAC compliance. The net result of ~30% of recent blocks being "OFAC compliant" (source: mevwatch.info) is simply that it will take non-OFAC compliant transactions very slightly longer (on average) to be included in a block.Image

0. Sharing something awesome built on @ethereum every weekday until I run out (I'll never run out)
@ethereum 1. @Aave is the worlds largest permissionless lending protocol.

Before Aave, @StaniKulechov built one of the first DeFi apps in 2017 called ETHLend. Today, Aave hosts $20 billion across the ecosystem.

And yesterday was Aave's 5th bday - thank you for building on Ethereum!
@ethereum @aave @StaniKulechov 2. @Fileverse is a decentralized alternative to gdrive, notion, and slack.

Fileverse lets you collab on docs, share files, and publish pages. Data is stored on IPFS, permissions are managed by smart contracts, and it's all open source and end-to-end encrypted.

0. Since EF spending has been a topic of conversation lately, here’s some thoughts and answers to some of the big questions we’ve seen.
1. First, we’ve been working on a new EF report, covering 2022 and 2023. We’re expecting to publish it before Devcon SEA.

Here’s a preview of spend information from the upcoming report (exact figures TBD).

2. Those graphs capture both internal and external spend.

For example, “L1 R&D” includes grants to external client teams, and it also includes internal EF researchers.

In both years, internal spend was about 38% and external spend was about 62%.

I agree that blockchains are *much* more useful for the 78% of humans who do not live in wealthy democracies

Western commentators on crypto are caught in this weird bind:

they and their audience are the small minority who need crypto *least*, yet they feel compelled to declare judgement on the whole project.
Timothy's take above (and the underlying post here: slowboring.com/p/cryptocurren…) are refreshing in one way, which is that they instances of critics beginning to understand the real terms of debate:

blockchains are alternatives, and complements, to *institutions*

Brandolini's Shadow: A space where bullshit thrives in the orbit of a real innovation.

Exists close enough to the real innovation to inherit reputation, but far enough away from the core that the people who know better won't spend time explaining why it is bullshit.

0. Fun piece of history about this:

the deposit contract the community used was just the first one to be uploaded w/ the verified bytecode

as far as I know, no one even knows who deployed it!

It wasn't "official" until the community opted to use it

1. When it first appeared, community members thought it was a malicious fake, as everyone was on high-alert for phishing schemes

several people tweeted warnings about it, and etherscan put a flag on it
2. But when the contract was examined, it contained only the contract-code that had already been audited, formally verified, and tested extensively in the run-up to the beacon chain launch

it didn't *matter* who uploaded it, because we could verify its contents

Suitcase Handle Words:

"Imagine an old, heavy suitcase whose well-worn handles are hanging by a few threads.

The handle is “Trust the Process” or “Story Is King”—a pithy statement that seems, on the face of it, to stand for so much more." 0/
"The suitcase represents all that has gone into the formation of the phrase: the experience, the deep wisdom, the truths that emerge from struggle. Too often, we grab the handle and—without realizing it—walk off without the suitcase." 1/
"What’s more, we don’t even think about what we’ve left behind. After all, the handle is so much easier to carry around than the suitcase.” 2/
