Glad to see this panel @The_ACNA

Cancel-culture efforts & demands for apologies leave me wondering: is the goal to get any initiative that tackles sexism/misogyny cancelled?

B/c if ppl can't even hear those words w/out melting down, it only shows how much we need this panel🧵
Over the yrs, countless people have contacted Bp Dobbs about the online behavior of Fr. Matt Kennedy.

I myself have done it publicly in the past. ⬇️

And I'm doing it again today, b/c I hope the province won't bend to cancel culture. 2/

Fr. Matt & Rev. Anne have again taken on the role of self-appointed ideological judge & jury, demanding a public apology & calling for the entire discussion to be shut down.

This is the opposite of cultivating healthy communities, let alone allowing for critical thinking. 3/ Image
This is the opposite of good faith discussion & debate.

I don't care if ppl like or don't like the book. Maybe it's terrible or good or (likely w/any book) a mix.

But the idea that Matt & Anne will determine what ppl in the @The_ACNA should read & discuss is a problem. 4/ Image
Most if not all the ppl signing the cancel petition haven't read the book. But the fruit of following Matt is concluding: "disgusting," "horrifying," "apostasy" "C4S0 must go"...all b/c Matt & Anne didn't like it.

The online fruit is to argue about WO & stir the pot. 5/
For instance, Mark Marshall hastened to produce this acerbic piece, where he concludes he is most upset that the panel setting out to address sexism/misogyny in the church has failed to take into account the feelings of traditionalists & men. 6/ Image

Mark feels so strongly about this, in fact, that he imitates Matt and Anne, suggesting that two bishops, the provincial office, and the entire ACNA "repent of this forum."

Look. In one sense, I know it's just social media. How many ppl are even aware of this? 7/
I recognize that online activity isn't representative of the whole & I hope the province does too.

But the longstanding knee-jerk reaction to the very mention of women's ordination in a province where the COB has *unanimously* agreed to diocesan sovereignty, is a problem. 8/
I don't know why Bp Dobbs, the acting Abp of @The_ACNA, seems fine w/ the clergy under his care in the @The_ADLW being known for online quarrelsomeness & FB groups that bite & devour ppl, but I have come to accept that he seems uninterested addressing it. 9/
He's not alone. Bps who take on episcopal authority & imagine they have the luxury to absent themselves from social media are part of the problem

I get that bishops are stretched too thin & many ppl don't want to engage this on socials. But this is where your ppl are. 10/
Reality is that any female clergy who show up in ACNA online spaces get bulldozed. I've witnessed it time and time again & most ppl understandably log off permanently.

It's a problem @The_ACNA, & not just for the women who must navigate that, but for the culture it reveals. 11/
In that sense, the crashouts, the petition, the scornful laughter, the outraged demands or apologies all perhaps only underscore how much we need panels like these.

I hope the @The_ACNA decision makers have eyes to see it. /end
Note: I directly called out 3 individuals in this 🧵, all public writers/teachers. I know all three agree w/me that public teaching/writing can & should be addressed publicly.

Even so, I wish I could tag them directly here as a courtesy, but they've all previously blocked me.

Another round of the worst @The_ACNA question game: is it episcopal incompetency, bishops behaving badly, or some combo of the two?

Seems like leaders being “above reproach” should be more important in a denomination that claims to value biblical authority 🧵
I’ve already seen knee jerk defenses: This-isn’t-true-Bp-Dobbs-denies-it or I-know-he’s-a-good-guy or ppl-making-claims-are-bad.

I’ll take them each in turn but, guys, can we reflect: Why is it so hard to find ACNA leaders w/unquestionable integrity? +
Is it that every bishop in the ACNA has a line of potential claimants waiting like skeletons in a closet?

Or is it that healthier bishops want nothing to do with provincial roles?

I have no idea but it shouldn’t be this hard, should it?

How is this not a conflict of interest?

I find it impossible to believe Bp Hawkins never tried to shape Weber's opinion.

Why? B/c Alan DMed me, a random layperson, disclosed confidential things over the course of 4 phone calls, & was displeased when I did not comply. 🧵
I began writing publicly about this in summer 2021. After my first FB post, Bp Alan DMed me w/reassurances & an invitation to talk.

I was surprised—I didn't know Bp Alan but wanted to use what access I had to advocate for the province to call in qualified external help. 2/
I had four phone convos & multiple emails w/Bp Alan & in the calls he disclosed confidential information—unasked for & unwelcome by me.

The first time, it felt like when ppl disclose details in a "pray for this" sort of way—info is out before you can formulate a response. 3/

Y'all, I am not a fan of AI. But I wanted to know the percentage of words devoted to Ruch's actions, narrative capture, provincial processes, and witness testimony.

It broke it down for me & offered some interesting prompts. Make of it what you will. 🧵 Image

Here's the breakdown: structure of the document is procedurally dominated, which AI suggests has implications of institutional protection & desire to emphasize procedural correctness. 2/ Image

This may explain why many ppl have questions, like: Why weren't all the charges addressed? What about Matta? Why were some things omitted? 3/ Image

It is mind-boggling to me that anyone would read these charges & be like, you know what, I think it's really important to tell the victims & those pastorally tending them that their online jokes are in poor taste. 🧵 Image

Worrying about offending somebody w/my tone would not even make the very last page of my very long list of things to care about if a trusted leader at my church had abused my 9YO or groomed my teen or raped my friend or anything adjacent to these allegations. 2/
And if I had listened to hundreds of accounts from people who had felt unheard, dismissed, or harmed in ACNA churches & I watched bishops again & again deflect responsibility, I am guessing I probably wouldn't have very much respect for them. 3/

"Spiritual orphans. Exvangelicals. Estranged children of the church. I can think of many descriptors for the displaced and hurting Christians who are navigating moral injury, church betrayal, and the institutional inability to hold errant leaders accountable." 🧵 Image
This week, my denomination, the Anglican Church in North America, after bungling a 4+ years investigatory process into allegations against a bishop, released a summary of their ruling of “not guilty on all counts.” 2/
Bishop Ruch, who was accused of a pattern of ordaining leaders with known predatory behavior among other things, “testified that he would not today support” the ordination of at least one of the men. The ACNA’s ecclesiastical court decided that: 3/ Image

Some ppl seem to want to tell me why I'm angry about the @The_ACNA ecclesiastical trial

Guys, I've been angry for years. Question is: why aren't you angry?

I am *embarrassed* and *scandalized* at the incompetence on display w/the trial & I'll tell you some reasons why 🧵
The trial court scolded advocates & ppl bringing presentments; that supercilious framing resembles the leadership immaturity that has categorized the @The_ACNA every step of the way.

It's the point of the trial to investigate.
Using the trial summary to kind of go off on any and everyone who tried to effect any kind of change *while at the same time* acknowledging how inept, chaotic, ill-informed, and damaging ACNA responses/processes were is beyond the pale. +
