It has been pretty rich to read what @politico / @PunchbowlNews have been writing about the GOP base and their / our fury about the SAVE America Act and the ham-handed manner in which it is being handled by @LeaderJohnThune.
A subject they clearly know nothing about.
Here’s the truth: Yes, our base and, I would argue, voters well beyond the GOP base will be extremely unhappy and angry if the SAVE America Act goes down.
@LeaderJohnThune has two choices:
He can kill the bill with a cloture vote so everyone blames and is mad at him and the Senate Republicans … and he will have brought that on himself and his GOP colleagues.
OR @LeaderJohnThune can put the bill on the floor and make the Democrats talk about it for as long as possible for whatever time it takes so everyone in the country can see over a period of time and try to pass it. And it will become apparent that it is the Democrats who want to kill the bill - and in doing that, make everyone mad at the Democrats.
A quick cloture vote is not “putting the Dems on record”. It is killing the bill. We are onto that ploy @LeaderJohnThune so don’t even try giving us that speech. It is a crock and we know it.
If @LeaderJohnThune proceeds with that strategy, he is putting a big fat target on himself and his GOP leadership pals. And he will utterly demolish base support for a GOP Senate.
I honestly think he does not understand this dynamic. Particularly since he thinks grassroots Americans and his constituents are “paid influencers”.
He can put the Democrats in the crosshairs OR he can portray the GOP as feckless and useless.
Totally his choice. What will it be @LeaderJohnThune?
